Coroner Identifies Coyote Reservoir Victim

Gilroy – The county coroner identified Luyen Ngoc Bui, a 37-year-old man from San Jose, as the man who died Monday in Coyote Reservoir. Bui decided to go swimming before he and two acquaintances went fishing Monday afternoon, according to witnesses.

The other two men went to get their fishing equipment; when they returned, Bui was missing. Sheriff’s deputies, park rangers and CalFire pilots searched the area, and found Bui in the water, not far from where he’d left his clothing and shoes. Cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Protect Yourself Against Sexual Assault

Gilroy – Two Wednesday events will bring together community members to learn about sexual assault issues and available services. Gilroy police are teaming up with the nonprofit Community Solutions at 6pm today at the Gilroy Police Department, 7301 Hanna St., to present information on sexual assault. Details: 776-6203.

A second event, held from 5 to 8pm the same night at New Hope Community Church, 8886 Muraoka Drive, is a three-hour clinic held by Andy Weissman, a former Riverside police officer, and Gary Cates and Susan Shapiro, two bail enforcement agents from California Surety Investigations. The event is an open forum on how to avoid attacks, and what to do when they can’t be avoided. For more information, call Pastor Chris Soto: 842-4857.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Tournament Raise Funds for Community Services

Gilroy – The third annual Garlic No-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament is set for 10am July 14 at the Gilroy Senior Center.

An entry fee of $60 is needed per team.

Proceeds benefit senior, teen and youth programs.

Gilroy – Meet a DNA Criminalist from the Santa Clara County Crime Lab and learn about forensics at the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St., at 6:30pm, Thursday.

Downtown Drive-In

Gilroy – The city kicks off its free Hot Rods and Cool Flics weekly movie series tonight with “Bikini Beach.” Residents are invited to set up a chair in the mural parking lot, at the corner of Fifth and Monterey streets, and bring a bowl to enjoy free popcorn. Classic cars will be on display starting at 5pm. Movie begins at dusk.
