County To Replace Uvas Creek Bridge

Morgan Hill – The county will replace the narrow 1923 bridge crossing Uvas Creek on Uvas Road. Santa Clara County supervisors approved the $4.4-million project Tuesday. Construction will begin in July and is expected to be finished in the summer of 2009.

The existing 20-foot-wide bridge lies between Gilroy and Morgan Hill. Uvas Road spurs off of Watsonville Road and is used as an alternative route to Silicon Valley by some commuters.

According to the county, there have been a number of traffic accidents on the historic two-lane bridge. To increase safety, its replacement will measure 38 feet, 6 inches wide with one lane in each direction and 6-foot-wide shoulders.

“The Uvas Creek Bridge is used by thousands of commuters on a daily basis,” said Supervisor Don Gage in a news release. “We want to make sure our residents drive on the best and safest roads.”

Federal funding will cover 80 percent of the design cost and 89 percent of the construction cost.
