The Morgan Hill Coyotes scored two runs in the bottom of the
final inning to beat the Silicon Valley Xtreme 5-4 in the
championship game of a 14-and-under baseball tournament Sunday,
June 7, at Ripon’s Mistlin Fields.
RIPON – The Morgan Hill Coyotes scored two runs in the bottom of the final inning to beat the Silicon Valley Xtreme 5-4 in the championship game of a 14-and-under baseball tournament Sunday, June 7, at Ripon’s Mistlin Fields.
Joey Persons scored the winning run on Jalen Salazar’s infield single after Jack Ross tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Persons doubled to set up the rally, moving Art Ahedo to third base.
Salazar provided the big hit, plus five solid innings of pitching. He allowed two runs on five hits.
The Coyotes used another comeback to win their tournament opener 2-1 over the Gunners. Jackson Gion tied the game with an RBI single, and Jacob Given drew a bases-loaded walk to win it. John Forestieri paced Morgan Hill’s offense with two hits.
In their second game, the Coyotes beat the Ripon Cyclones 5-3 behind the pitching efforts of Matt Nielsen and Adrian Garcia. They received help from Isiah Azua, who gunned down a runner at home from center field, completing a double play.
Gion pitched Morgan Hill into the finals with a complete-game, four-hitter against the Cyclones. Ahedo collected two RBIs on a pair of hits in the 7-1 triumph.
NOTE: Led by coaches John Given, Jim Persons, Mark Gion and manager Rich Boss, the Coyotes are composed of players from Morgan Hill and Gilroy. They are 19-9 in their spring season and have won 11 of their last 13 games.
