Here’s your weekly dose of noteworthy criminal acts in Gilroy:
Girl fight at library
Those in the parking lot of the Gilroy Library at 10 a.m. April 20 may have witnessed a girl fight. A woman said a female stranger approached her and assaulted her, and that she had no idea what motivated the suspect to do that. The suspect was described 5′ 4” female in her 20s, who drove a white Honda Civic. The suspect approached the victim and allegedly accused her of badmouthing something and then attacked her before she fled. “This may have been a case of mistaken identity,” said Gilroy Police Sgt. Pedro Espinoza.
Man arrested for domestic violence
A man by the name of Jose Gogora, a 50-year-old Gilroy resident, allegedly grabbed his longterm girlfriend by the shirt and shoved her around in their home on the 7400 block of Rogers Lane at 3:40 April 20. Then, he allegedly took out a knife and slashed the right side of her torso, causing a superficial six-inch cut. He fled the scene on foot and came back to the area an hour later and was promptly arrested and taken to jail.
Cocaine arrest
During a traffic stop on Monterey Street and Sixth Street at 9:25 p.m. on April 20, police determined that Walter Banshak, 55, was driving under the influence. During a search of the car, police found 1.5 grams of cocaine on the front seat.
Gang attack in bar parking lot
In the wee hours of April 21, around 1:54 a.m., a group of four people left El Tenampa on Monterey Street. About eight suspects, who were described by the victims as “gang bangers” approached them, kicking and punching them to the ground before fleeing the scene. One victim was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and treated for minor head injuries. Espinoza said the Anti-Crime Team is following “good leads” in their investigation.
Home burglarized while family sleeps
An unknown suspect entered a home on Ervin Court at 12:30 a.m. April 21 while a family of four slept upstairs. The suspect stole about $1,800 in cash. No suspects have been arrested.
