San Jose – Santa Clara County District Attorney announced Monday he would investigate the illegal garbage deal made between San Jose and Norcal Waste Systems Inc. to determine if there was nay criminal wrongdoing.

“The findings of the civil grand jury … raise serious questions about the processes used by the city of San Jose to enter into this agreement … as well as serious questions about whether any laws were violated in connection with these transactions,” said District Attorney George Kennedy. “As a result, I will be working with the civil grand jury to look further into this matter.”

Kennedy did not specifically mention Mayor Ron Gonzales, but it has been the mayor who has admitted cutting a backroom deal with the garbage provider. He said his intent was to get lower rates for city customers. Gonzales has admitted lying about the deal to the city council and the public, but has denied criminal wrongdoing.

Last week, the council censured him.
