Levee lighting
“It amazes me that there have not been more violent incidents on the levee. For all of us athletes, runners and people who enjoy the convenience of the levee, I’m speaking on behalf of you too. I’m not the only one that runs the levee routinely and I know this because I run past several other levee enjoyers every time I run on the levee. Anyone who runs long distances, knows it is extremely difficult to run long distances in the scorching heat. As a result, some postpone their runs until dusk or later, like myself, and some run in the wee hours of the morning, before the sun comes up. My question is, when is the city planning on putting sufficient lighting on the levee? I’m sure the levee enjoyers would appreciate the lights and feel more safe when they use it.”
Red Phone:
Sorry caller, City Parks and Facilities Manager Bill Headley said there are no plans to install lights on the levee.
“There would be some significant costs not to mention issues that need to be resolved with the functioning of the levee,” Headley said. “Any improvements could not conflict with the water district’s activities along the levee. It doesn’t mean it’s impossible to put lights on, but there are no plans for it right now. This would have to be prioritized by council as an issue to be addressed.”
Where’s the red curb?
“With Santa Teresa being done, when you make a right hand turn onto Mantelli, the two lanes merge into one and it’s posted no parking at any time. Is that curb going to be painted red? Frequently there are cars parked there and on weekends there are real estate agents park there to put their signs out on the corner. Thank you.”
Red Phone:
Paint or no paint, cars shouldn’t be parked there.
“The posted no-parking signs allow the police to enforce the parking situation,” City Transportation Engineer Don Dey said. “Whether it’s red curbed or signs, the two have the same enforcement effect. We don’t just as a matter of course stripe everything red.”
So, good caller, if you see someone parked illegally, take action. Ring up the Gilroy Police Department a call at 846-0350.
Report those planes
“Hi there, regarding ‘freaky flyover’ (Saturday’s column), I too have seen many planes flying low, going around and around over homes as well as planes performing stunts over homes. I’ve been advised that when we do see that happen, we need to call the Flight Standards District Office at 291-7681 and if possible, take a picture of the airplane when you witness it. The neighbors need to get together and report this so we can put a stop to this noise nuisance as well as safety issue.”
Red Phone:
On behalf of those who called regarding the plane recently flying low, Red Phone thanks you for the information. It checked out the number and found it legit. It also found the Flight Standards Web site, where, good readers, you can find additional information should you wish to do so. Visit www.faa.gov/about/office_org/field_offices/fsdo/sanjose.
