I spent the day today catching up on the Dispatch. With less than a week to go before returning home to Gilroy, I know that I won’t have the luxury of leisure time to read through three weeks worth of newspapers. I really appreciate being able to get my local news fix online. Here is my view from a distance.
I skipped right over the editorial with the words “sex club.” I would be astounded if anyone would consider opening another Forum-like club here in Gilroy. I am assuming that it is merely coincidental that this item appeared right after the Supreme Court struck down sodomy laws and Canada gave its stamp of approval to gay marriages. Gilroy doesn’t need another summer of sex scandal. I don’t know if Mayor Springer is up for it (no pun intended). My advice to aspiring adult club owners is to “drive a little further and save a lot of heartache.”
To no one’s surprise, Cynthia Walker is happy that filters are now required on library computers. Frankly, I have never encountered any porn viewing people at the library. Nor have my children. This has always been a vastly exaggerated problem. Happily, the Supreme Court ruling spells relief to the 20 or so people in Gilroy who are afraid to go to the library.
The biggest news since I left town is that GUSD has approved the Day Road site for a second high school. I live quite close to the site – right off of Sunrise Drive. I have no problem with the selection of this area for a high school. I laughed out loud when I Read Howard Cowles letter to the editor. A couple of years ago he nearly sued the school district because his daughter didn’t get into the school they chose, the only school in the area.
We here in the Northwest Quad are finally getting some schools which are in close proximity to where we live. Of course there will be traffic issues. This would be true of any location in Gilroy. I welcome a high school and church on this site. I believe that too many people in the greater Gilroy community have the impression that those of us who live in the Northwest Quad are opposed to anything but single family homes near us.
We are not all in agreement with Howard Cowles or the Save Day Road coalition. I love the Day Road area. However, anyone living in Gilroy could have seen the writing on the wall. When I moved to Gilroy in 1994, I was disturbed by the lack of diversity in the northwest neighborhood. I welcome schools, churches and small businesses near my house. These are the components of a good neighborhood.
I didn’t get around to the issue with Shappell and the Thomas family; I’ll have to save that for when I get home. I am getting ready now to drive over the state line to New Jersey to buy some gas for $1.34 per gallon. That is not a typo It is a guilty pleasure that I can have someone fill my tank up (no self service allowed in Jersey) and still get change back from a twenty.
In a week I will be back to reality, but I am enjoying this while I can. Happy and safe Fourth of July to all in Gilroy!
