Senioritis, a sickness that starts showing up in high school seniors around this time of the school year, is running rampant at Gilroy High School. It gets stronger when seniors start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, their high school graduation. Some symptoms to look for if you think you may suffer from senioritis are skipping school, a feeling that you need to get out of town, or dropping grades because of the lack of work being done.

What is making senioritis worse for most of us seniors at Gilroy High is the state’s CAT 6 testing being conducted now at the high school. Seniors do not have to take the standardized tests but the underclassmen do.

Beginning April 21 and ending Wednesday, seniors get to come later to school than usual. Most of the days seniors come late to school we don‚t have to come to school until about 10:30 a.m., but one day seniors didn’t have to go to school until noon.

Getting those few more hours really makes a difference to teenagers.

The underclassmen do the testing in the morning while we seniors sleep in. It is really great for all of the seniors because we don’t have to get up early and we get almost two more hours of sleep in the morning. But, this entire coming to class late thing makes me not want to go to school all day because I already got to sleep in so much. I wonder to myself, “Why should I to go to school now? I already slept in so long.” This makes senioritis even worse for me as well as many of the other seniors.

Personally, I have had the sickness since my junior year. I may have caught it earlier than most because I have been fortunate enough to do some traveling and see a little bit of the rest of the world. I have been to Europe twice and I went to South America earlier this year. I have seen how people live in different parts of the world. When I come back to Gilroy where I have lived my whole life, I realized how much I am missing out on and want to get out and see more of the world as soon as I can.

When it has come time to go home from any of my vacations over the last couple of years all I want to do is stay there. I never want to come back home and live the life I have been living for 18 years. I love Gilroy and I take much pride in my country, town, and school but after living here all my life I want a change. I want to get out and live on my own and have my own new adventures.

Recently, I went to North Carolina to visit my boyfriend who is stationed there with the Marine Corp. Being there made me realize even more how much I can’t wait to be out of high school and in a new place with a whole new group of people to get to know. I love the people in Gilroy and they will always be in my heart because they are whom I share memories with but I need a change and I need it soon.

I am going crazy waiting for graduation from high school and the day I leave to join the Army. Senioritis has officially taken over and the shorten school days because of testing is making it even worse. But, I am hanging in there, trying not to slack off and make the last six weeks of school really count.
