Mr. Hewell was born 80 years ago in Atlanta, Ga. He moved to California in 1940 where he met his wife Hazel. They have been married 61 years. He served in World War II overseas where he was wounded in action. After recovery, he returned to the battlefield and was awarded the purple heart and bronze star. After his service in the military, he returned home to Gilroy and began working for Standard Oil Company, eventually going into business for himself. He was a member the American Legion Post 669 in Gilroy, the Gilroy Elks and he served on the Board of Trustees of the Gilroy High School District in the late 1950s.

Mr. Hewell was an avid golfer and member of the Gilroy Golf Course for 50 years. He served as president of the Men’s Club in 1964. He loved golf, at times being a 2 handicap, and looked forward to the days on the course with his friends.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Hazel Hewell, he is the father of Carolyn Barbaglia and Sue Fullington and her husband Jack, Mark Hewell and his wife Sabrina, all of Gilroy and the late David Hewell. He is the beloved grandfather (Pa Pa Dew) of Bryan Barbaglia and his wife Jennifer, of Gilroy; Lisa Barbaglia of Washington, D.C.; Brent Barbaglia, of Gilroy; Dylan Fullington and his wife Emily, of Morgan Hill; Derek Fullington, of Sacramento; Kevin Hewell and his wife Lori, of Dallas, Texas; and Markley Hewell, Jason Hewell and Shaunie Hewell, all of Gilroy. He is the beloved great-grandfather of Gina Barbaglia, Nate Barbaglia, Karlee Fullington, Lindsey Hewell and Ethan Hewell. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents William and Clara Hewell, a sister and seven brothers.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Habing Family Funeral Home. Burial will be at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.

Donations to the Lord’s Table or a favorite charity in his memory would be preferred and appreciated.
