Diabetic Man Arrested After Slow-Speed Chase

Gilroy – A diabetic man from Santa Rosa took California Highway Patrol officers on a lengthy slow-speed chase from Redwood City to Gilroy Thursday morning, behind the wheel of a rented U-Haul.

Officers surrounded 30-year-old Jacob Kells on Murray Avenue in Gilroy around 10am, one hour after he first hit the gas, evading a Redwood City CHP officer. Kells had been involved in several hit-and-run crashes in Redwood City that morning, said CHP Sgt. Dave Hill, none of them causing injuries. Victims called the CHP alerting them to Kells, who pulled over for a CHP officer, then began driving south on U.S. 101. His speed never exceeded 60 miles per hour, Sgt. Hill said.

When he finally stopped and got out of his car, hands up, Kells was lethargic, sweaty and unable to answer questions, said Hill. His statements to officers made little sense. Officers gave him tubes of glucose paste to recharge his blood sugar, then transported him to Saint Louise Regional Hospital.

Kells was later arrested and transported to the emergency psychological unit at Valley Medical Center for his own safety, Hill said.
