Worker memorial Tuesday
San Luis Obispo – Caltrans will hold its annual worker memorial ceremony honoring workers killed while working on the state’s highways Tuesday,
Each year during the statewide Worker Memorial Day, Caltrans honors those who lost their lives by placing their names on a memorial plaque in the lobby of Caltrans headquarters in Sacramento.
Since 1924, 166 Caltrans employees have been killed on the job – including three in the last 10 months. Gilroy resident Sean Merriman, 32, was killed April 4 while working on U.S. 101, after a tow truck slammed into a Caltrans vehicle, pinning him against another Caltrans truck.
Caltrans warns motorists to “Slow for the Cone Zone” because one of the biggest hazards workers face is from motorists who do not exercise caution while driving through highway work zones.
The ceremony will take place at 10:30pm, at the Caltrans District 5 office at 50 Higuera St., San Luis Obispo.
