World adventurer speaks to AAUW
Gilroy – Members of the Gilroy Branch of the American Association of University Women and prospective members will have a fall membership luncheon from noon to 2:30pm Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Westside Grill, 8080 Santa Teresa Blvd.
The speaker will be Dena Dickinson, RN, MS, an adventurer and world traveler whose day job is manager of public health clinics for Santa Clara County.
Guests will have a choice of three entrees for the all-inclusive cost of $21. Reservations must be made by Oct. 1.

Leadership Gilroy accepting applications
Gilroy – Leadership Gilroy is accepting applications for the 2007 class. The mission of Leadership Gilroy is to develop an informed and diverse group of leaders who will build Gilroy’s future. Now in its eleventh year, Leadership Gilroy has graduated more than 195 individuals who want to make a difference in the community in which they live and work.
The extensive nine-month program consists of three major components: skills training, community awareness, and personal development. Participants will also be required to complete a community project during the nine-month period. Participants meet monthly, January through September. The deadline to submit a completed application is Nov. 10.

Speak out against bias, violence and hate
Gilroy – A new group calling itself South County Speak Out! Against Bias, Hate Violence, and Hate Crimes, invites the public to a speak out at 7pm Wednesday, at the Gilroy Senior Center meeting hall, 7371 Hanna St. Attendees will be invited to share their experiences of bias, and to discuss community approaches to end bias, hate violence, and hate crimes. This forum is wheelchair accessible. It is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to park on Sixth Street due to construction.

Home and Garden Show coming
Gilroy – The event will be Oct. 6 through 8 at Bonfante Gardens. The show begins Friday from 3 to 8pm with Gourmet Garden Gala $15 admission. The show is included with general admission to Bonfante Gardens and continues Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm.

SV Symphony first concert of the season

STAR presents a Spooktacular program
Gilroy – The Gavilan STAR Program is now accepting registration for Fall STAR 2006. Saturday, Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 9am to 12pm, cost $99. Fall STAR is a Saturday morning acting workshop for students ages 8 to 16. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of theatre and participate in writing and rehearsing Halloween themed skits. Fall STAR ends with a final performance in the Gav TV studio.
