Assistance League grants
GILROY
– The Gilroy Assistance League is accepting grant requests for
2003. Last year, GALS gave out over $9,000 to various local youth
causes, including Brownell Academy Music Department, Gilroy
Community Youth Center, GHS Grad Night, and St. Joseph’s Family
Center. Grant requests should be a written le
tter requesting a specific amount of money and what it will be

Cal grant workshop

GILROY – Many students and their families find it difficult to complete college applications without assistance. Assemblymember Simon Salinas, in coordination with the California Student Aid Commission, and various local universities and colleges have joined to sponsor workshops to provide help completing applications for the 2003-2004 academic year. March 3 is the deadline for high school seniors to submit completed federal financial aid forms necessary to apply for Cal Grant. A workshop will take place on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Gavilan College Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., 1 to 4 p.m. Details: (916) 319-2028.

Go wild

MORGAN HILL – The Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center provides educational programs about wildlife, the environment and local Native Americans with interactive, hand-on learning experiences combining lectures, visual and tactile examination of teaching aids, observations of live educational animals, hands-on projects and scientific testing. The goals of these programs are to instill respect for wildlife, promote lifelong sensitivity for our fragile environment and foster appreciation for our local heritage. ‘Lend me a Tenor’

MORGAN HILL – South Valley Civic Theatre presents ‘Lend me a Tenor,’ an adult comedy about the mishaps of a world famous tenor during opening night 1934 at the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. Performances are held at Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, on the corner of Monterey Road and Dunn Avenue. 8 p.m. performances are held on Feb. 21, 22, 28 and March 1 with a 2 p.m. matinee on Feb. 23. Friends of animal shelter

SAN MARTIN – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter will hold an open house on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. until noon at the shelter, 12370 Murphy Ave. Learn about the many colunteer opportunities available while taking a behind the scenes tour of the shelter. All ages are welcome, however you must be at least 18 to handle the animals. Details: 683-4186.

Blood drive

Senior’s day

GILROY – Hometown Buffet located at 7950 Arroyo Circle is holding “Senior’s Day” in honor of all the Senior Card Holders on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Those who enjoy lunch or an early dinner will receive a free raffle ticket and will have a chance to win prizes. Heading East

GILROY – Now through Feb. 28, the traveling exhibit entitled “Heading East: An Exhibit on California’s Asian Pacific History” will be on display at the Gavilan College Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. The exhibit coincides with the lunar new year celebrated by many Asian cultures. Heading East is a traveling exhibit which documents the role of the Asian Pacific American in the history of the state of California. It has been exhibited around California since 1999, most recently at the San Jose International Airport. The exhibit consists of large photographic panels and columns, with text and quotes throughout. The panels, over 6-feet tall, create an interactive space in which the viewer can experience the exhibit. Details: 848-4724.
