Kidnap victim recovered
GILROY
– GIlroy Police Department officers recovered a kidnapping
victim Thursday morning and arrested the kidnapper.
Juan Hernandez Garcia, 18, from Oxnard, was arrested by officers
on charges of felony kidnapping and an outstanding warrant when
they responded to a call from the victim’s family.
The 15-year-old female was able to call her family in Dinuba
from a pay phone at 343 East 10th St. near a Laundromat just before
10 a.m. Thursday, and the family called Gilroy Police.
Police responded to the call and found the victim being held by
Garcia. Dinuba officers came and took the girl back to her family
and Garcia was taken to back to Dinuba as well.
WERC Chevy’s night

GILROY – Chevy’s restaurant will host a fund raiser for the Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 8440 Murray Ave. Just go to Chevy’s for lunch or dinner, then place your meal receipt in the designated box at the host’s stand. Cal grant workshop

GILROY – Many students and their families find it difficult to complete college applications without assistance.

Assemblymember Simon Salinas, in coordination with the California Student Aid Commission, and various local universities and colleges have joined to sponsor workshops to provide help completing applications for the 2003-2004 aca-demic year. March 3 is the dead-line for high school sen-iors to submit completed federal financial aid forms necessary to apply for Cal Grant. A workshop will take place on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Gavilan College Student Center, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., 1 to 4 p.m. Details: (916) 319-2028.

Dual immersion information

GILROY – Las Animas is holding two information nights about its Dual Immersion Program at the school located at 8450 Wren Ave. The Spanish meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 25 and the English meeting on Thursday, Feb. 26. A Duel Immersion parent night will be Wednesday, Feb. 26. All meetings will be held in Room 25 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Details: 842-6414.

Blood drive

GILROY – Gilroy’s First Baptist Church in conjunction with the American Red Cross will hold a community blood drive on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from noon to 6 p.m. at the church, 8455 Wren Ave. To make an appointment, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE. The blood drive will continue March 19, May 14, June 18, July 23, Aug. 20, Sept. 17, Oct. 15 Nov. 19 and Dec. 10.
