Car thief arrested

GILROY – Morgan Hill Police arrested a Gilroy man on charges of auto theft and residential burglary late Sunday night. The suspect, Mario Vincent Fausto, 23, a transient, is believed to be responsible for a string of recent auto thefts where vehicles were taken from owners’ garages or from their driveways as they were warming up in the Gilroy and Morgan Hill areas.

Morgan Hill Police officers received a “be on the lookout” broadcast for a stolen vehicle from Gilroy Police Sunday evening. While officer Shane Palsgrove was looking for the vehicle in the East Dunne Avenue area, he observed the vehicle entering northbound U.S. 101.

Palsgrove followed the vehicle and waited for assistance to arrive. Officers form Morgan Hill Police and the California Highway Patrol caught up to the stolen vehicle at U.S. 101 and Blossom Road in San Jose, where a vehicle stop was made and Fausto was taken into custody without incident.

Boat destroyed in fire

GILROY – Firefighters from Las Animas and Chestnut stations responded to a fence and boat fire at 7350 Orchard Drive at 3 a.m. today.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out within five minutes. The boat and trailer were destroyed at a value of $11,000, but the home of Steve Prenticece was spared, said Mark Ordaz, fire engineer at Chestnut Fire Station and acting captain.

A neighbor spotted the fire and called 9-1-1, he said.

“And luckily she did, because a couple more minutes it would’ve been into the house,” Ordaz said.

Firefighters said the fire was likely caused by contents in a garbage can in front of the residence.
