Downtown cannery project gets OK
Gilroy – The first phase of a project to redevelop the defunct cannery site in downtown Gilroy received council approval Monday night. As a condition of the approval, nonprofit developer South County Housing agreed to widen a private road leading to the first 39 homes in the Lewis Street development. The council approved the project 5-1-1 (Councilman Roland Velasco voted no and Mayor Al Pinheiro recused because he sells insurance to South County). The cannery project will bring 210 new homes and 45,000 square feet of retail space to the area. Officials consider the project a linchpin of downtown renewal.
