Potential Coyote Valley Gavilan College campus

Gilroy – The Gavilan College Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to begin studying a site for a potential new campus in Coyote Valley.

The land under consideration is generally located southwest of Bailey Avenue and Santa Teresa Boulevard in San Jose.

Coyote Valley, San Jose’s proposed 7,000-acre development, is Gavilan’s northern most service area.

The eventual development of Coyote Valley would increase the number of total residents served by Gavilan from approximately 150,000 to 230,000.

The process of establishing a new site will take several years, including obtaining an environmental review and state approval.

A $108 million bond measure approved last year will provide funding for the study, as well as funding to acquire new land and expand facilities.

The vote to pass the resolution to begin the study was 5-0, with Trustee Laura Perry absent from the meeting.

National speaker to visit Gavilan College

Gilroy – Some students feel like admitting defeat before they even set foot in a college classroom, and a national speaker coming to Gavilan College knows exactly how they feel.

Educational counselor Mario Rivas will give a presentation for Gavilan College students tomorrow from 9 to 11am at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., in room SS214.

Rivas, who comes from a Latino single-parent family, struggled with his early education in the United States, including his initial college studies at Laney Community College in Oakland.

His mother worked as a maid and used welfare assistance to raise Mario and his brother, Francisco. Their father was abusive.

Despite Rivas’ sometimes bleak conditions, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in physchology from California State University Hayward, a master’s degree in counseling from San Francisco State University and a Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Development Psychology from the University of Minnesota.
