Caplan new head of college system

Sacramento – George Caplan is the new president of the California Community College System’s Board of Governors.

Among Caplan’s goals as president is developing a strategic plan, something the state’s community college system has never had. Caplan said the plan will address the increasing number of freshmen who lack very basic English and math skills, severe overcrowding in classrooms, the grossly inadequate student-to-counselor ratio (1,200 to one) and the changing educational requirements for community college students to transfer to California State Universities.

An attorney, Caplan heads the litigation department at the international law firm of Kaye Scholer. He formerly served as president of the executive board for the College of Letters and Science at the University of California-Berkeley.

There are about 2.5 million students in California’s community college system.
