Be in the write group

GILROY – Join the Gilroy Writing Project every third Saturday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Gilroy Library. Experienced writers from print, broadcast and other media will share tips and anecdotes on the writing life. Tea and coffee are provided. Get down with Ragtime

GILROY – Performers Candace Fazzio and Jack Bradshaw will present “Unexpected Ragtime,” an evening of piano music of the Americas, past and present, on Saturday, March 6, at 2 p.m., in the Gilroy High School Theater. Classic Ragtime music by Scott Joplin and Joseph Lamb will be featured along with works by Ernesto Nazareth, Ignacio Cervantez and lyrical, contemporary music by Galen Wilkes, Scott Kirby, Hal Isbitz and Max Morath.

The concert is a benefit for the Gilroy High School Choral Program, including the Chamber Singers who have traveled through not only California, but also the Orient, Germany and the Czech Republic under the direction of Phil Robb. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students and free to children under 6. Opera Dinner

GILROY – Old City Hall, 7400 Monterey St., will hold “Opera Dinner,” a black-tie-optional feast and opera, on Sunday, Feb. 22, from 6 to 10 p.m. Selections from “Phantom of the Opera,” “La Boheme,” “Carmen,” “Barber of Seville” and more will be featured. Soprano singer Elise Rothford, baritone singer Michael Taylor and pianist Vlasta Vlakancic will be performing. Details: Old City Hall at 846-8880.

Apply for grants

GILROY – The Gilroy Assistance League is accepting requests for grants for 2004. Last year, GALS gave out more than $10,000 to various local children and youth causes. Requests should be a hand-written letter asking for a certain amount of money and telling what that money will be used for if granted. All requests must be received by Monday, Feb. 23 to be considered. Grants will be issued in May. Mail requests to GALS, 7477 Eigleberry St., Gilroy, CA 95020. Details: 842-8251.

Listen to the music

GILROY – The South Valley Symphony, Inc. and the Pacific Brass Band will hold a concert on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gilroy High School Theater. The program will consist of a wide range of music; from march and patriotic to folk, pop and opera.

Tickets are available at California Music Company and Porcella’s Music in Gilroy, as well as at the theater box office an hour before the performance. Cost is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens 55 years or older and students aged 12 to 18 are $7. Space is limited so get tickets in advance.

GILROY – The Gilroy High School Classes of 1968 and 1969 are planning a joint reunion for June 26. The committee has been working very hard to locate its former classmates. MORGAN HILL – The Greenbelt Alliance is hosting the chance to travel through Uvas Canyon County Park on Sunday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. On this moderate, four-mile looped hike, discover several different waterfalls, including the wide Upper Falls and the three-tiered Triple Falls.
