This one-day classroom refresher for motorists 50 and older will familiarize participants with driver safety, new DMV tests and laws. Three-year DMV certificates will be awarded for discounts on auto insurance upon completion of the program. No tests will be given. Space is limited so reserve your place in advance. GILROY – The South Valley Symphony and the Pacific Brass Band will hold a concert on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gilroy High School Theater. The program will consist of a wide range of music – from march and patriotic to folk, pop and opera.
Tickets are available at Snappy Photo, California Music Company and Porcella’s Music, as well as at the theater box office an hour before the performance. Cost is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens 55 years or older and students aged 12 to 18 are $7. Space is limited so get tickets in advance.
Dance the night away
GILROY – St. Mary’s Youth Group will hold a “Mexican Fiesta,” an adult dinner dance, on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 6 p.m. to midnight, at Cullen Hall, 11 First St. The event will feature a no-host bar, sounds to DJ spinning, an auction and a raffle. Softball tryouts
GILROY – The Gilroy Chaos Traveling Team 10 and Under Clinics will be held on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m., at Christmas Hill Park. This is a team for girls fast-pitch softball. Details: James Jiminez at 422-1600.
Red hot play
GILROY – The City of Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie present the Children’s Winter Theater Production “Red Hot Revue,” a 1920s style multi-media extravaganza, now through Sunday, Feb. 22, at the Gilroy High School Theater, 750 W. Tenth St. Performances on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays will be at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees will be at 1 and 5 p.m. More than 75 local young actors will present music, singing, dancing, flappers and flickers (black and white movies) in this celebration of the “razzle dazzle” of a golden era.
Tickets are $10 per person. All proceeds will benefit the 2004 Kids Discover Arts Festival. Details: 846-8836.
Opera Dinner
GILROY – Old City Hall, 7400 Monterey St., will hold “Opera Dinner,” a black-tie-optional feast and opera, on Sunday, Feb. 22, from 6 to 10 p.m. Selections from “Phantom of the Opera,” “La Boheme,” “Carmen,” “Barber of Seville” and more will be featured. Soprano singer Elise Rothford, baritone singer Michael Taylor and pianist Vlasta Vlakancic will be performing. Details: Old City Hall at 846-8880.
Measures B and E Endorsed
MORGAN HILL – The South County Democratic Club recently recommended a “yes” vote on the passage of Measure B (supporting our local libraries) and on Measure E (Gavilan College Bond Measure). Additionally the Club endorsed Simon Salinas for Assembly and Morgan Hill resident Teresa Guerrero-Daley for Superior Court Judge Seat 18. Representatives Mike Honda and Zoe Lofgren also received endorsements in their respective Congressional Primaries.
Apply for grants
GILROY – The Gilroy Assistance League is accepting requests for grants for 2004. Last year, GALS gave out more than $10,000 to various local children and youth causes. Requests should be a hand-written letter asking for a certain amount of money and telling what that money will be used for if granted. All requests must be received by Monday, Feb. 23 to be considered. Grants will be issued in May. Mail requests to GALS, 7477 Eigleberry St., Gilroy, CA 95020. Details: 842-8251.
Monologues showing
GILROY – Gavilan College and Community Solutions present Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues,” directed by Gavilan student Cherise Mantia, at the Gavilan College Theater on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Monday, March 1, at 7 p.m. “The Vagina Monologues” is an internationally acclaimed play aimed at raising awareness to end violence against women. Families get grant for job help
GILROY – Familias Pueden of Gilroy has received a Community Impact Grant of $19,619 from Community Foundation Silicon Valley. The grant will go to the Employment Services program at Familias Pueden to help 50 low-income parents who are either unemployed or under-employed develop job search skills. The program includes preparing and reviewing resumes, learning how to interview effectively, preparing for and retaining a new job and support services.
