Gilroy – Rehearsals for the opening concert of the South Valley Symphony will be Aug. 25, beginning at 7:15 p.m. in the band room at Ascension Solorsano Middle School, 7121 Grenache Way. Openings exist throughout the string section including violin, viola, cello and contrabass and while no auditioning is required, prospective musicians should have a working knowledge of reading music. Position openings also exist in the trombone, French horn and percussion sections. The orchestra will perform a series of five concerts in the season.

There is no cost to enroll, all registration fees are paid for through fund raising efforts, donations, and grants by the orchestra’s board of directors. All interested musicians are encouraged to contact Sue Piccardo at 683-4848 or Al Navaroli at 842-3934.

Challenge Mt. Madonna

Gilroy – The South Valley Symphony will hold ‘The Mount Madonna Challenge,’ a fundraising event, on Sunday, Aug. 29. Also sponsored by the Gavilan Joggers and Striders, the event will feature a ‘6K Salamander Walk and Race’ beginning at 8:30 a.m. followed by the ’12K Mt. Madonna Challenge Race’ at 9 a.m. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

All racers are to report to the Spring Lake picnic area site at the base (Gilroy side) of Mt. Madonna County Park on Highway 152.

Pre-registration fees are $20 with shirt or $13 without. Medals will be awarded to the first three places in each age group in both races, while trophies will be awarded to the first place man and woman in the 12K race only.

Completed registration forms should be made payable to the South Valley Symphony, Mt. Madonna Challenge, and mailed to P. O. Box 1347, Gilroy, CA 95021-1347. T-shirts will be guaranteed for all pre-registered entrants.

Online registrations may be done at active.com or allsportrunning.com.

Registrations received after Aug. 24, 2004, will be priced at $25 with shirt and $18 without.

Symphony season

Gilroy – Season tickets for the South Valley Symphony will go on sale Wednesday, Sept. 1 and may be obtained by writing to the symphony at P. O. Box 1374, Gilroy, CA 95021-1374.

By subscribing to season tickets, concert-goers will receive one free concert. Prices per concert are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens age 60 and older and $7, for students ages 12 to 18. Season ticket prices are $75 for adults, $60 for senior citizens age 60 and older and $35, for students 12 to 18. They will be mailed to subscribers no later than Oct. 1.

Cars in the ‘hood

San Martin – The second annual San Martin Neighborhood Alliance (SMNA) ‘Happy Days Car Show Fundraiser’ will be held in the San Martin Country Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21. Enjoy food, fun and live music by the JJ HAWG band.

Admission is $5. A registration fee of $20 includes T-shirt and entry fee.

Rummage for Rover

San Martin – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) is preparing for their third annual rummage sale to be held in September.

Donations of usable household goods, clothing, pet supplies, etc., are now being accepted. Clean out the house while contributing to help animals at the shelter through a tax deductible donation.

Donations may be dropped off at the San Martin Shelter, 12370 Murphy Ave., Monday through Saturday, except Tuesdays, from noon to 5 p.m.

Realtors raise money

San Martin – Each year, the South County Realtors Association raises thousands of dollars and tons of food for local charities.

Kick off this year’s fund raising with authentic Hawaiian food and music on Sept. 10 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the San Martin Country Park.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for kids up to 18 years old and free for children younger than 5 years old.

For each ticket purchased, guests will also receive a ticket for the raffle which includes a grand prize trip to Hawaii.

Tickets for the raffle can also be bought for $1 each.

Guests who bring canned goods or non-perishable items to the event to help building the ‘Can Tree’ and receive a ticket for the many other raffle prizes.

Do something wild

MORGAN HILL – The Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center is currently accepting applications for volunteers.

WERC is the only facility in south Santa Clara County permitted to care for orphaned, injured and sick native wildlife.

The organization works under the California Department of Fish and Game and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.

Duties range from office work, fund raising and community outreach to cleaning, feeding and caring for injured, orphaned and sick native wildlife.

All volunteers are required to be at least 16 years old.

Volunteers must work a three-hour shift at least once a week and are asked to make a four-month commitment during the spring and summer months.
