GILROY – The Gilroy Gators Swim Team will hold their annual ‘Swim-a-Thon Fundraiser’ at the Gavilan College pool on Friday.

The fundraiser brings in the bulk of the money for the swim team, which includes boys and girls from ages 6 to 18.

To raise money, each swimmer collects sponsors who donate according to the total number of laps the person swims in a one-hour session, with a goal of $100 dollars per swimmer.

Prizes donated from local businesses will be offered based on the amount of money a swimmer raises and the total number of sponsors.

Seniors come together

GILROY – The monthly Senior Focus meeting will be held Friday, from noon to 1 p.m., at their new meeting place, The Wheeler Manor, 651 W. Sixth St.

Joan Sattler from Gilroy Healthcare Center will speak about ‘Ask Alice,’ a TV program from Gavilan College, and the impact of Human Health Services in South County.

Other topics to be discussed include the Senior Resource Handbook, 2004 Open Fairs in South County, senior issues and services, as well as ideas and comments. Bring your own bag lunch; Beverages and dessert will be provided.

Garlic golf

GILROY – The 25th annual ‘Gilroy Garlic Festival Golf Tournament’ will be held Friday, at Gilroy Golf Course, 2695 Hecker Pass Road, from 1 to 6 p.m.

The fee of $100 per person includes green fees and shared cart, raffle, great tri-tip steak dinner and an afternoon of fun. Proceeds will benefit local charities.

GILROY – Gavilan College Theater Arts’ Summer Theater Arts Repertory (STAR) 2004 presents ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., on Friday, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, at 3 and 7 p.m. The event is produced by special arrangement with Tams Witmark Music Library. Adults are $12, seniors and students are $10 and kids under 12 are $8.

Barbecue for education

GILROY – The thirtieth annual ‘John Birch Society Barbecue and Auction’ will be held on Saturday, at The Patane Barn, 6650 Holsclaw Road.

Proceeds will go toward scholarships for Robert Welch University’s American Heritage Youth Camp. Reservations are preferred.

It’s better with garlic

GILROY – Barnes and Noble will host author Sara Perry on Saturday, at 2 p.m. Wake up and smell the stinking rose – with more than 65 delicious ways to celebrate garlic.

Ms. Perry shares her favorite recipes, from tangy beef tenderloin with port garlic sauce to heavenly garlic ice cream in her book, ‘Everything Tastes Better with Garlic.’

She also will appear on the Today Show, and will be featured at the Garlic Festival.

Hospice volunteers needed

The Kaiser Permanente Hospice Program at Santa Teresa Hospital, 50 East Main Ave., Morgan Hill, is in need of volunteers for the Gilroy and Morgan Hill area.

Hospice volunteers are needed to make home visits to hospice patients and families and/or make bereavement phone calls on a monthly basis. Training is provided.

Volunteers always welcome

GILROY – Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy has a constant need for volunteers. Adult volunteers are needed in patient services areas such as skilled nursing and infant-hearing screening. Volunteers are also needed in the gift shop and the information desk.

People interested in volunteering must help out on at least two three-and-a-half-hour shifts at the hospital each month. They need to fill out an application, have an interview with Volunteer Coordinator Gail Paccioretti, and attend an orientation meeting.

Volunteers must also take a free tuberculosis skin test administered by hospital nurses.
