during the Letter Carriers Food Drive on May 8. Countywide, 417,208
pounds were collected. The food benefits Second Harvest Food Bank,
which still has more food to collect, but the amount already
exceeds 2003 totals by 90,366 pounds.

Clay shoot and BBQ

GILROY – The California Deer Association is sponsoring the Junior Clay Shoot and BBQ slated for Saturday, May 22 for those 16 and younger. Check in time is 9 a.m. at the Coyote Valley Sporting Clays, 1000 San Bruno Ave., Morgan Hill.

The event is free, though shooters need to bring a shotgun and protective classes. Shells will be provided.

Community Blood Drive

GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a community blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave.

In May, the American Red Cross is trying to build a large reserve of blood for an expected drop-off in the summer due to donor vacations.

Donators must be 17 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Please bring ID, two forms if it is not government issued.

Use those senses

GILROY – Chitactac-Adams County Park, located at the intersection of Watsonville and Burchell roads, will hold ‘Wildlife Sensory Awareness’ from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 21.

Discover how animals have adapted to survive in the wild by using all of their senses. Nature walk and activities incorporate sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. Details: 323-0107.

Robot wars

GILROY – Sacbots presents ‘The Gilroy Bot Gauntlet’ on Saturday, May 22, at noon at Hobby World, 6901 Monterey Road.

Admission is free. Entry fee is $15 per robot. Weight classes are divided into one-pound ant weight and three-pound beetle weight. First place prize is $200 and second place prize is $75.

Remember those who served

GILROY – The National World War Two Memorial will be dedicated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 29 in Washington, DC.

National Veterans organizations across the nation have requested that local Veterans Organizations pay tribute in their own cities.

The Local American Legion Posts 669 and 217 along with the Veterans of Foreign Wars 6309 are participating in the dedication at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 29, at the Veterans Memorial Building, 74 W. Sixth St.

Mayor Al Pinheiro and Supervisor Don Gage will greet visitors. Gilroy’s Company B 184th Infantry who left Gilroy on March 3, 1942 will be honored. All WW II veterans are encouraged to attend, be recognized for their unselfish sacrifices and eat lunch. General admission is $12. Reservations are required; no tickets will be available at the door.

Remember the innocent

GILROY – The Knights of Columbus Council 2469, with the Catholic Men’s Breakfast Club, invite caring citizens to join them for a rosary recitation in memory of the unborn on Saturday, May 29 at 10 a.m., at St. Mary Cemetery on First Street.

Meet at the tombstone dedicated in memory of the unborn.

The stone was purchased by Knights of Columbus and the plot was donated by St. Mary Church. Join for the renewal of this dedication and remember those innocent lives we have lost.

Sponsor a camper

GILROY – Remember the fun of going to camp- eating around a camp fire, learning new sports and crafts and making new friends? The Salvation Army is working to send 10 children in need, ages 7 to 12, in Gilroy, San Martin and Morgan Hill to summer camp.

Summer Camp gives the children a place to laugh, sing and have fun with peers. Help a kid in need make life-long memories by sponsoring a camper.

Cost is $170 per child per week or $26 per day for a child. Camp at the Glen Rose Salvation Army Summer Camp in Santa Cruz will be June 30 through July 5.
