Boost your breakfast

GILROY – The Gilroy FFA Boosters will be hosting a pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, at the Grange Hall, 8191 Swanston Ave. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door.

Miss Nor Cal competition

GILROY – The 2004 Miss Gavilan Hills/Miss Northern California Regional Pageant will be at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, April 17, at the Historic Strand Theatre. Twenty contestants will compete for titles of Miss Gavilan Hills and Miss Northern California Regional, and the opportunity to compete for Miss California in Fresno. Winners will earn $1500 scholarships.

Library Week

GILROY – During the week of April 18 through 24, National Library Week, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) will keep people connected to local libraries. Discover a place of opportunity, education and lifelong learning at the Gilroy Library, 7387 Rosanna St., with the help of VTA bus lines 19 and 68. Childrens storytelling, as well as teen and adult programs are available. The new Gilroy Writing Project, where experienced writers from a broad range of media share their tips on the writing profession, is another opportunity found at the library.

Give others life

GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a Gilroy community blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, April 21, at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave. Donators must be 17 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. GILROY – Coyote Lake County Park is holding a free Junior Ranger program for kids 9 to 12 years old. Learn about the roles of a park ranger, and the plants and animals in the park, as well as the Ohlone people who once lived here. Turn yourself in, walk away

SAN MARTIN – On Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18, from noon to 6 p.m., the Santa Clara Sheriff’s Office is implementing program “Cite Service I,” which allows citizens with non-violent misdemeanor criminal and traffic warrants to be released with a citation on their promise to appear in court. Those eligible for the program are warrants with: A bail of $5,000 each or less, multiple failure to appears, driving under the influence, stamped with ‘no cite and release’, ‘no walk over’ and/or ‘post and forfeit’.

These citizens will be given a new court date and released. Those not eligible for the program include: Felony, no bail or high bail, and/or violent warrants. Citizens who wish to turn themselves in for a cite and release and/or paperwork noting they self-surrendered may go to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office Substation, 12431 Monterey Road. Explore ‘Wildflower Day’

LOS BANOS – The public is invited to Pacheco State Park from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturday, April 17, for “Wildflower Day” to view the spectacular display of wildflowers at one of California’s newest State Parks.

Representatives from California State Parks, California Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others will be on hand to answer questions and give information on other parks and nature reserves in our area.

Free self-guided nature hikes and flower identification guides will be available. The self-guided hike is about two miles long and includes many flower stops and a beautiful view of San Luis Reservoir and the Central Valley. Naturalist-led hikes will depart at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a limited number of people. Both hikes discuss the Native American and pioneer uses of the plants found as well as local history.

The only fee for this event is the $4 state park day use fee per car.

Facilities at Pacheco State Park are limited so bring your own water (no drinking water is available) picnic lunch, sunscreen, hat and sturdy footwear.

Pacheco State Park is at the top of Pacheco Pass, just take the Dinosaur Point Road Exit off of Highway 152, 22 miles east of Gilroy, and follow the signs.

Walk while you fight

SAN JOSE – The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Silicon Valley Chapter is hosting “The 2004 Rainmaker MS Walk.” The annual fundraiser to fight multiple sclerosis, takes place Saturday, April 17.

The 10K walk, along the beautiful Los Gatos Creek Trail, features continental breakfast provided by Whole Foods Market, jazzercise warm-up, fully stocked rest stops and a party at the finish line.

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. It will start at the e-Bay Complex in San Jose, 2055 Hamilton Ave. at Bascom and finish at Los Gatos High School.

Transportation is available to take participants back to the start point from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

‘Catch’ the flying brothers

WATSONVILLE – The Flying Karamazov Brothers present their newest show “Catch” in a benefit performance for Mount Madonna School at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 17, at the Mello Center.

Tickets are $30 for general admission, $25 for students and seniors, $20 for kids 12 and younger, $85 for a family pack of two adults and two kids with $10 each additional child, or $65 for the Gold Circle, the best seats in the house.

HILMAR – The Wadi Arabian Horse Association is holding its “Spring Playday” on Sunday, April 18, at Rascal Slough Ranch, 18639 August Ave.

The event featurea classes in which participants play games on horseback.

Ribbons will be awarded for first through fifth places. Sign-ups are from 8:45 to 10 a.m., and the first class begins at 10:15 a.m.

A class fee of $4.95 will be charged per class.
