– The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) is
partnering with Our Pet Shop to help to find loving families for
homeless animals.
Come to the FOSMAS pet fair from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May
1, at Our Pet Shop, 705 First St. Stop by to find a new furry
friend; make a donation to help cover spay/neuter, medical, food
and litter expenses; or sign-up to volunteer at the shelter.

Choir concert

GILROY – The Gilroy High School choirs will present their annual Spring Concert tonight at Gilroy Presbyterian Church, 6000 Miller Ave. This will give the choirs the opportunity to share with Gilroy what they have taken thoughout the state and abroad.

The choirs all performed March 27 in San Luis Obispo at the American Choral Directors Central Coast Choral Festival.

Four of the five choirs received commendations for excellence by the adjudicators. The auditioned Women’s Chorus, Concerto Delle Donne, returned from their Southern California tour the first weekend of April with top honors in both festivals they participated in.

Their highest honor was receiving both the “Adjudicators Award” and “Outstanding Choral Group” at the Heritage Festival in Anaheim.

The Chamber Singers returned April 18 from their tour of Germany and the Czech Republic. All six performances were received by the German and Czech audiences with enthusiasm and requests for encores.

Doors open for seating at 7:10 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. A $3 donation requested at the door will help cover costs for the use of the facility and the numerous events that the choirs have been involved in these past few weeks. Details: 847-2424 ext. 2288.

Go for Spaghetti

GILROY – St. Mary School Men’s Club is hosting their “42nd Bi-Annual Spaghetti Dinner” on Friday, April 30 in the Parish Hall, 15 First St.

The all-you-can-eat dinner includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert and beverage. Adult tickets are $7 and children to age 12 are $5. Take out service begins at 4:30 p.m. and sit down dinner is served from 5 to 8 p.m.

The proceeds from this delicious Gilroy tradition benefit school programs and the school’s Endowment Fund. Tickets are on sale in the school office and will be available at the door. Details: 842-2827.

Christian scholarship

GILROY – The Christian Fine Arts Society is offering a $1,000 grand prize in a religious poetry contest. Free to everyone, there are 50 prizes in all. Poems may be written on any subject, using any style, as long as there is a spiritual inference.

Get into history

GILROY – Prepare for Memorial Day by visiting Gavilan Hills Memorial Park with members of the Gilroy Historical Society, Saturday, May 1. Meet at the entrance to the cemetery, 1000 First St., across from Safeway at 10 a.m. Find graves of Gilroy’s founding fathers, veterans from the Civil War to the present and many other special sections and monuments.

The setting is a beautiful, shady place to explore Gilroy’s history. Reservations are recommended but not required.

The Gilroy Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Once a month the museum opens on Saturday. Details: 848-0470.

BBQ, wine tasting

GILROY – Fortino Winery, 4525 Hecker Pass Highway, will host more than 25 vendors and floral displays from Westside Nursery from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, May 1, to help your Mother’s Day shopping. The tasting room will provide wine tasting, items for sale and a special preview of a barrel to be released. Barbecue is $3 and kids’ activities will also be available.

Love our planet

GILROY – The Audobon Society and the City of Gilroy invite Gilroy residents to attend a “Earth Day” celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 1, at Christmas Hill Park. Local environmental organizations will be on hand with fun activities for the entire family.

AAUW garage sale

GILROY – The American Association of University Women will be holding a large garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 1 at 830 W. Sixth St. to benefit scholarship programs. Please bring items the day before the sale, then come help price and sell. Details: Ruth at 842-1309.

Last chances to catch ‘Rumors’

GILROY – Pintello Comedy Theater will present the final performances of “Rumors” with two American Sign Language interpreters for deaf patrons on Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1 at 8 p.m. Stephanie Pintello and Amber Marince are ASL interpreters for Ohlone College in Fremont and have been interpreting plays for the school for several years. The play will be held at 8531 Church St.

The show is produced by Rod and Marion Pintello. Written by Neil Simon, the play stars Kevin Heath and Jayson Stebbins as friends of a deputy mayor who disagree on how to handle a possible scandel. Their difficulties are exaggerated by their wives, played by Whitney Pintello-McClelland and Kirsten Francis Carr.

Relay for Life

GILROY – The American Cancer Society’s Gilroy Relay For Life, a 10K/5K event, will be held Saturday, May 15, beginning and ending at Christmas Hill Park, Ranch Site. On-site registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and race will start at 9 a.m.

Crab Feed

GILROY – The Gilroy High School Athletic Association will present the 24th annual “Crab Cioppino Feed and Dance” on Saturday, May 8, at Christopher Ranch, 305 Bloomfield Ave., from 5:30 to 11 p.m. All-you-can-eat dinner includes salad, garlic bread and red wine.

Proceeds will support the cost of transportation for Gilroy High School athletes. The Joe Sharino Band will provide live music for dancing from 8 to 11 p.m. Corporate Sponsorships are available from $125 to $1,500 and include advertising and ticket packages. Event is for adults 21 and over only, please. Cost is $40 per person.
