GILROY – Golfers eager for a spring scramble that supports a good local cause can sign up now for the annual St. Mary Golf Day slated for Eagle Ridge Golf Course on Friday, April 23.

Tee off is at 11 a.m. for the four-person team tournament that benefits St. Mary Parish and the St. Joseph’s Family Center. Included in the $200 entry fee: golf, cart, shirt, lunch, cigars, tee prizes and a wonderful dinner in the clubhouse.

Cocktails begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. The auction will feature sports memorabilia from former 49er greats like Jerry Rice and items signed by members of the San Jose Sharks.

Plan for success

GILROY – Gavilan College Small Business Development Center will hold “Writing Your Own Business Plan” from 5:45 to 9 p.m. on Monday, April 12, at the Gavilan College SBDC offices at the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St. Bldg. GILROY – Gavilan College Small Business Development Center will present “Basic Bookkeeping for the Small Business Owner” from noon to 3 p.m. and “Starting Your Own Business” from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, at the Gavilan College SBDC offices at the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St. Bldg. E.

Sponsor school barbeque

GILROY – Have your business name displayed on a large sign during Luigi Aprea Elementary School’s eighth annual May barbeque on Friday, May 14.

Just donate towards the barbeque and in recognition Luigi will display you or your company as a sponsor. Sponsors of $150 or more will be included on event t-shirts.

Transportation internships

GILROY – Students can apply to get paid work experience in the field of transportation this summer through the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s High School Internship Program. Students at least 16 years old and will have completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade by June with a GPA of 2.8 or more, will be employed either full or part time in the summer.

Students with a GPA of less than 2.8 will only be considered with two letters of recommendation. About 23 paid internships are available.

Interested students must submit an application, a one-page cover letter and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, principle or counselor through www.mtc.ca.gov, by request at (510) 464-7700 or through e-mail at in**@****ca.gov.

Applications must be received by Friday, April 16.

Weekend Pageant

GILROY – The 2004 Miss Gavilan Hills/Miss Northern California Regional Pageant will be on April 17 at the Historic Strand Theater. Contestants will compete for titles of Miss Gavilan Hills and Miss Northern California Regional and the opportunity to compete for Miss California in Fresno. Winners will earn $1500 scholarships.

Special guests are Gail Heffner Henreid, who will celebrate her 20th anniversary of becoming Miss Gavilan Hills, Danielle Coney, Miss California of 1998 and Stephanie Baldwin, Miss California of 2001.

Time to throw it out

GILROY – During the week of April 19 through 23, Gilroy residents can set out 7 additional 32-gallon cans/bags of garbage on their regular garbage pickup day.

Residents may also drop off 2 bulky items for free at San Martin Transfer Station, 14070 Llagas Ave. in San Martin, until July 31. Bulky items include mattresses, appliances, furniture, etc. Bring the original copy of your April billing statement to show you are a Gilroy resident.

A fee of $22 will be charged for appliances containing Freon, such as refrigerators, freezers, etc.

Give others life

GILROY – The American Red Cross will hold a Gilroy community blood drive on Wednesday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at First Baptist Church, 8455 Wren Ave.

Donators must be 17 years or older, weigh at least 110 pounds. and be in general good health. Please bring ID, two forms if it is not government issued.
