Gilroy – The Garlicky Group of Poets will hold their monthly open poetry reading at 3:30pm today at the Gilroy Public library. Public participation is welcome.

Music makers meet today

Gilroy – The South Valley Music Makers will hold an open mic for musicians and listeners from 1 to 4pm today at the studios of the Music Academy. All ages are welcome.

Watch the battle of the marching bands

Gilroy – Fourteen California high school marching bands will battle it out on the Gilroy High School football field tonight. The competition kicks off with a rendition of the National Anthem at 5:30pm. The Live Oak High School marching band will perform at 5:56pm, followed by Gilroy High School at 6:09pm.

The final band will perform at 9pm and awards will be given at 9:25pm.

The event also serves as the No. 1 fundraiser for the GHS band. Pepper Steak sandwiches, refreshments and other goodies will be sold a the booths on the GHS football field. Gates open at 5pm. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students/senior citizens.

AKC responsible dog ownership day

Gilroy – The Gavilan Kennel Club is hosting responsible dog ownership day in an effort to help dog owners raise happy, healthy dogs. From 10am to 3pm Sunday at Christmas Hill Park. Activities include demos, microchipping, vaccinations and more.

‘Soul Terrain’ auditions

Gilroy – The Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie Present auditions for “Soul Terrain.” Motown meets the jungle in this all singing, all dancing wild revue. Auditions will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna Street. Ages 5 to 10 1pm, ages 11 to 14, 2:30pm and ages 15 to 18, 4pm. Please prepare to sing a short song without music and wear comfortable clothing.
