Candidate drops from race
Gilroy ? John Leyba, one of three candidates vying for a seat on the Santa Clara County Board of Education, has dropped out of the race.
That leaves Jane Howard and Esau Herrera. Howard, the incumbent, and Herrera, a former Alum Rock Union Elementary School District and Eastside Union High School District board member, will compete for the one open seat in District 7 in the November election.
The district encompasses Morgan Hill and Gilroy unified and the Alum Rock Union school districts. A total of seven trustees sit on the county board, with each one representing one of the districts.
Leyba, 27, who unsuccessfully ran for the Alum Rock board in 2004, said prior to placing his name on the ballot he knew little about Howard. Since he didn?t know who would be running for a seat he added his name but after meeting Howard decided to drop out and throw his weight behind the incumbent.
Leyba, a financial analyst for Agilent Corporation who attended Alum Rock schools, said the race isn?t about individuals it?s about ?ideas, the role of government and effective governance.?
