GILROY – The City of Gilroy Office of Emergency Services and South County Neighborhood Disaster Preparedness Project will begin a seven-week series of Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) classes on Tuesday, Feb. 10, from 7 to 10 p.m., at Chestnut Fire Station. The CERT program trains residents to respond properly to disasters. Classes include instruction on fire suppression, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, terrorism and communications, and personal preparedness. Admission fee of $25 includes a hard hat and a vest. Minimum age to participate is 13. To register call 846-0372 or e-mail gc***@**********ca.us or register at the door.
Flood control meeting
MORGAN HILL – The public is invited to attend a meeting of the Uvas/Llagas Flood Control and Watershed Advisory Committee. Once a quarter the group meets to review flood protection and stream stewardship projects and programs in South Santa Clara County. Committee members advise the Santa Clara Valley Water District’s Board of Directors. South County members are Rosemary Kamei and Sig Sanchez. Try out for soccer
GILROY/MORGAN HILL – Orchard Valley Youth Soccer League is holding its annual tryouts for competition teams on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14 and 15, alternating between Rod Kelley School in Gilroy and P.A. Walsh School in Morgan Hill. Players born between Aug. 1, 1986 and Aug. 1, 1995 are invited to attend and must wear shin guards and cleats. Tryouts are free. Details: www.ovysl.org.
Feast on crab
GILROY – The Gilroy Knights of Columbus Council 2469 will host a “Crab Feed” on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the St. Mary Parish, 11 First St., in the Cullen Hall. Happy hour starts at 6 p.m., followed by the crab feed at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 each and are available at the parish or by calling Frank Borge at 842-4357 or Stanley Villalobos at 848-9865.
Volunteers needed to oversee Gavilan funds
GILROY – Gavilan College trustees voted to begin forming the Citizen’s Oversight Committee that will oversee expenditures if Measure E, the Gavilan College Facilities Improvement Bond, is approved by the voters in March. The committee will consist of at least seven members, selected by the board of trustees, to serve for a term of two years. Members shall serve without compensation.
The committee shall be comprised of members from various stakeholder groups.

Entertainers needed
GILROY – Live Oak Adult Day Services, 651 W. Sixth St., is in need of volunteers on a one-time or regular basis who can share their talents with the elderly at the center. Come and sing, play the piano, share vacation slides or a pet, tell stories or jokes, etc. Details: 847-5491.
Apply for grants
GILROY – The Gilroy Assistance League is accepting requests for grants for 2004. Last year, GALS gave out more than $10,000 to various local children and youth causes. Requests should be a hand-written letter asking for a certain amount of money and telling what that money will be used for if granted.
