Faith in action

GILROY – St. Mary Parish and the Gilroy Ministerial Association present “Faith in the Developing World” – a Series of Lenten Talks – at 7 p.m., at St. Mary Parish, 11 First St. Tonight, Brian Malovany and Brian Avery will describe the work they do for peace between Israel and Palestine. On Thursday, March 18, Larry Lauro will reflect on the role of Catholic teaching in his work for justice in Latin America. The talks are free and the public is invited to attend. See young artists

GILROY – City of Gilroy Community Services Department presents the 2004 Young Artists Show, an exhibition of local talent, now through Friday, March 19, at the Willey Cultural Center, 140 Fifth St. The event features the work of young artists from 5 to 18 years of age. The display is open noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 3 to 6 p.m. on Friday. Special arrangements can be made for school and group tours. GILROY – The City of Gilroy Housing and Community Development, Gilroy Police Department Neighborhood Resource Unit, United Neighborhoods of Santa Clara County and South County Housing present “Gilroy Neighborhood Academy 2004,” at Krazy Koyote Restaurant, 8337 Church St., from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. on these dates:

• On Tuesday, March 23, the theme Crime Prevention/Safe Neighborhoods will feature information on 911 versus non-emergency calls, gang awareness, graffiti and neighborhood watch.

• On Tuesday, March 30, “Building Your Neighborhood Association” will teach organizing and running a meeting, encouraging participation and building a stronger association.

• On Tuesday, April 6 “Getting the Word Out/Keeping Track of Finances” will be the last session.

Certificates will be awarded to those who attend all three sessions. Free and light refreshments will be provided. Seating is limited. Call Gilroy Police Department CSO Rachel Muñoz at 846-0524 if interested in attending.

Celebrate music

GILROY – The Gilroy High School Chamber Singers present “Spring Celebration Of Music,” a concert/wine tasting event, on Saturday, March 20, beginning at 4 p.m. The concert will feature four renown artists from the Bay Area who have donated their performances to help the Chamber Singers go to Germany. In April 2004, the Chamber Singers will be performing in the East German cities of Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden, as well as in the city of Prague in the Czech Republic.

Guest performers will be Maria Armirkhanian, concert pianist, Emil Miland, cellist, Karen Mc-Con-achie, soprano singer, and Ruth Butter-field-Winter, orchestral pianist. The Gilroy High School Chamber Singers will also be performing. Local fines wines and hors d’oeuvres will also be included in the event. Tickets are $75 per person. GILROY – The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is proposing to increase bus, light rail and paratransit service fares. If approved the new fares will go into effect in January of 2005.
