GILROY – Registration is now open for the Gavilan College Concert Choir, directed by Phillip Robb, which begins its spring semester tonight.

The choir meets every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m. at the Gilroy High School choir room and is open to all singers college-age and above. Reading music is helpful, but not required. This spring semester the choir will be working on a broad selection of music that spans 400 years of music history, including composers such as Bach, Mendellsohn, Schubert, as well as 20th Century composers Kirk Mechem and Gweneth Walker. Performances will be in April and May.

Singers who are interested may register at the Gavilan College Registrar’s Office or pick up materials tonight at the meeting. Details: Phillip Robb at 847-2424 ext. 2288.

Be an educated parent

GILROY – The Gilroy Family Resource Center, 8833 Monterey Road, will host the Family Development Academy, a seven-week parent education course, starting Thursday, Jan. 29, at 5:30 p.m.

The Academy is designed to provide support, guidance, mentoring and education for parents with children up to 5 years old. Parental concerns such as “normal” behaviors, expectations of development, appropriate ways of discipline and much more will be covered. Child supervision is provided.

Meet the candidates

GILROY – The South County Democratic Club will meet on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m., at a private home at 7690 Santa Theresa Drive. They will discuss upcoming March primaries and meet the Gilroy candidates. Invited to speak are Manny Diaz, Elaine Alquist, Simon Salinas, Mike Honda and Teresa Guerrero-Daley. See science come alive

GILROY – Gavilan College, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., will host “Science Alive!” on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the student center.

Science Alive is a day of hands-on workshops that make learning science and math fun. Students in grades five through eight and their parents can choose among 16 different workshops, including “Robots and You,” presented by Mark Leon of NASA, where participants will get to operate a robot hands-on; “What’s in the Box,” presented by Gavilan instructors Vic Robinson and Janet Conrey, in which students will take a computer apart and put it back together; and “A Cow’s Eye View,” presented by Dr. Dennis Harrigan of Gilroy Veterinary Hospital, will teach students the anatomy of the eye by having them dissect a cow’s eyeball.

Optional workshops “Financial Aid: Money for College” and “Preparing for High School and College – What Parents Should Know” will be offered for parents in both English and Spanish.

Interact with Laurence Juber

GILROY – The Strand Theatre, 7588 Monterey St., will host Laurence Juber as he gives “An Interactive Concert Experience” on Friday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m.

Juber was hand-picked by Paul McCartney to become Wings’ lead guitarist. After Wings disbanded in 1981, Juber embarked on a solo career and soon developed a reputation as a world-class guitar virtuoso.

This interactive concert will be an entertaining performance interspersed with question and answers and a free flowing discussion about the art of guitar playing, the history of the instrument and anecdotes from Juber’s many years of professional touring.

Game-day for after the Super Bowl

GILROY – The Gilroy Branch of the American Association of University Women will hold “No-Ball-Game-Day” on Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Historic Strand Theater, 7588 Monterey St., from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bring your board game or deck of cards and your friends and prepare for fun. The festive event will include lunch, two gaming sessions, door prizes and snacks. All kinds of games from Bunko to Yahtzee will be played, just no ball games.

Come by yourself, with your daughter, neighbor or card playing group. Proceeds will go to benefit a broad array of scholarships for girls. Tickets are $25 each and are available by calling Suzanne Barrett at
