GILROY – The Gilroy High School Parent Club needs volunteers to work at the Garlic Festival and raise money that will go straight into classrooms, helping out hard-working teachers. Come and work, have a good time and earn money for a good cause. Hours worked at the festival equal money back to the Parent Club.

Learn the basics

GILROY – The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center will host ‘Basic Bookkeeping’ on Tuesday, from noon to 3 p.m. at the SBDC Office, 8351 Church St., Bldg. E.

This workshop is for the small business owner who knows that bookkeeping is important for success, but is intimidated, confused, or unskilled in keeping financial records.

Get control of your business with the basic, handwritten, double entry bookkeeping system. Cost is $20 per person, payable in advance or at the door. Reservations are required.

GILROY – The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center presents ‘Business Planning’ on Wednesday, from 5:45 to 9 p.m. at the SBDC Office, 8351 Church St., Bldg. E.

Good Planning is the basis of any successful business and a necessity for a loan application.

This workshop will focus on developing a marketing plan, financial projections and a strategic plan to put your business on the road to success. Cost of $20 per person includes workplan. Reservations are required.

Learn why customer service skills are so important, keys to high quality service, the 10 deadly sins of customer service, tools for dealing with challenging customers, good customer service strategies and much more. Reservations are required.

GILROY – The Gilroy Economic Development Corporation in conjunction with the Silicon Valley Workforce Investment Network, Career Advancement Solutions and Gavilan College Small Business Development Center present ‘Workplace Skills in a Retail Environment’ at the Gavilan College SBDC office in the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., Building E, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 31.

The free eight-hour training course will help students learn the basics of working in retail.

The instructor will review working in a retail environment, principles of customer service, work attitudes and ethics, business communication, dealing with difficult people, handling money, cashiering and scanning practices. Space is limited so register in advance.

Stories with Pooh Bear

GILROY – Barnes and Noble presents ‘Bedtime Stories’ on Thursday, at 7 p.m. Children ages 3 to 6 are invited to listen as story-tellers read several favorite bedtime stories.Kids may come in bedtime attire if they wish. This week special guest Winnie the Pooh will join in for storytime fun.
