Sacramento – Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill Wednesday authorizing $600 million of state general funds to construct and improve public library facilities if voters approve the bond bill in March 2006.

The bill, SB 1161, requires a 35 percent local match.

In 2000, voters approved $350 million in library construction grants to be distributed in three rounds. Gilroy applied for but did not receive grants during the first two rounds.

The third grant cycle is underway, and Gilroy has applied for $14 million to construct a new, 53,000-square foot library.

The decision will be made in November.

Portuguese celebrate with annual festival

Gilroy – Our Lady of Fatima’s annual festival will be held Sept. 28 through 29, and Oct. 1 through 3.

On Sept. 28, 29 and Oct. 1, the rosary will be recited and Mass will be celebrated at 8 p.m. in the chapel at St. Mary’s Church, on First and Monterey streets.

At 6:30pm Oct. 2, Mass will be celebrated in Portuguese and Spanish at St. Mary’s Church, followed by a candle light process around the church. A dance will be held from 9pm to 1am at the I.F.D.E.S. Hall at 250 Old Gilroy St., with a presentation of the committee, queens and sidemaids at 10pm.

A parade will take place Oct. 3, beginning at 10:15am at the I.F.D.E.S. Hall, proceeding to St. Mary’s Church. Mass will be celebrated at 11:30am in Portuguese and English. The parade will return to the I.F.D.E.S. Hall, where sopas will be served and an auction will follow. A dance will be held from 5 to 9pm, with rosary recited during the second break.

Commission plans Hecker Pass

Gilroy – The city’s planning commission will hold a special meeting at 7pm Oct. 14 to continue studying the Hecker Pass Specific Plan and its Environmental Impact Review.

The Hecker Pass plan is tentatively scheduled to go before the City Council on Oct. 18.

Planning commission will hold its regular meeting to discuss issues other than Hecker Pass at 6pm Oct. 7.

Past, future of Gav’s baseball program

Gilroy – Gavilan College’s baseball program will feature both its future and its past in a pair of special events set for October.

On Friday, Oct. 8, the program’s future will be the focus at a golf tournament fundraiser at the Gilroy Golf Course. It includes a noon shotgun start.

All alumni, players and supporters are invited to sign up for the event.

All proceeds benefit the Rams baseball program.

The following day, the Gavilan baseball program’s past will be highlighted at an Alumni Baseball Game at the Gavilan College baseball field.

The game is scheduled for a noon first pitch and Gavilan baseball coach Neal Andrade said longtime Coach Bob Nickerson’s jersey will be retired at the game.

All former Gavilan baseball players are invited to play, and all program backers are encouraged to attend.

Bilingual election officers needed

Gilroy – The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters needs about 500 more Spanish-English bilingual election officers to provide language assistance to Spanish-speaking voters.

Election officers must be registered in Santa Clara County and have their own transportation to the polling place.

Workers will receive a stipend between $95 and $130 for attending a training and working at the polls.

Time to step into symphony season

Gilroy – Season tickets for the South Valley Symphony are on sale by writing to PO Box 1347, Gilroy, CA 95021-1347.

Prices are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens age 60 and over and $7 for students ages 12 to 18. Season ticket prices are $75 for adults, $60 for senior citizens age 60 and over and $35 for students 12 to 18.

The season opening concert is set for Saturday, Oct. 16, at 7:30pm, at the Gavilan College Theater and will feature local soloists, including Beverly Blount on the violin, performing Ralph Vaughn Williams’ composition, “The Lark Ascending,” as well as “March Militair” by Franz Schubert and “The Moldau” by Bedrich Smetana.

40 Days of Purpose Campaign begins

Gilroy – Gilroy Presbyterian Church and the Foothills Foursquare Church will launch their “40 Days of Purpose Campaign” Saturday.

Inspired by remarkable stories of spiritual renewal and growth, an estimated 13,000 churches from 60 denominations have already experienced the purpose-driven phenomena inspired by a California pastor’s best-selling book.

At the center of the campaign is the fastest-selling hard cover nonfiction book in history.

“The Purpose Driven Life” has sold more than 16 million copies since it’s release in 2002.

The book’s author, Rick Warren, is the senior pastor at one of America’s largest churches, Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif.

Following its 40 Days of Purpose Campaign two years ago, Saddleback Church baptized 671 new believers, added almost 1,200 new members, and increased average attendance by about 2,000.
