The event was slated to take place Sunday, Sept. 19, from 4 to 8pm. SMNA is hoping to reschedule the event for spring.

Book fair benefits

Gilroy – The public is invited to a Scholastic Book Fair sponsored by Gilroy Las Madres from 10am to 6pm today at The Piazza Professional Office Building at First Street and Santa Teresa Boulevard.

Books for all ages will be featured, and crafts and contests for children will be held.

A portion of proceeds will be donated to local charities.

Gilroy Las Madres is a nonprofit support, education and friendship organization for parents of young children from birth up to kindergarten.

Ronnie Lott in Morgan Hill for charity

Morgan Hill – Ronnie Lott, NFL Hall of Fame member and former San Francisco 49er safety, will be the featured guest at a special Cigars for Charity night at the Morgan Hill Tobacco Company on Sunday, Sept. 19 from 6 to 8pm at 17430 Monterey Road in downtown Morgan Hill.

“It’s a chance to meet and talk with one of the greatest football players of all time who happens to be a great guy, too, in an intimate setting,” said Wyatt Miller, the cigar shop’s proprietor.

The two-hour event is a fund-raising kickoff for a golf tournament that raises money for Lott’s charity, All Stars Helping Kids.

A tax deductible $150 donation will include Camacho cigars, a chance to win numerous autographed items and your choice of wine or beer.

A professional photographer will be on hand to take and print photographs.

Seating is limited to the first 50 people who respond.

SM animal shelter rummage sale

San Martin – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter is holding its 3rd Annual Rummage Sale, Friday and Saturday.

The sale will be held from 4 to 6pm, Friday, and from 8am to 4pm Saturday at the San Martin Animal Shelter, 12370 Murphy Avenue, San Martin

Proceeds will help provide food, shelter and medical care to homeless animals. Come, find a bargain and help that animals.

Celebrate Mexican Independence Day

Gilroy – Gavilan College celebrates Mexican Independence Day from 10am to 2 pm, today, on the school’s campus at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

The community is invited to spend a few hours enjoying the festivities, which will include food, mariachi, pinatas, a BBQ lunch and a voter registration drive.

The event is free and open to the public, however there is a charge for lunch.

This will be the second year that the Sept. 16 celebration will include voter registration efforts.

“Currently the ASB is focusing much of it’s efforts on voting and voter registration,” said Michelle Vucetich, Associated Student Body Vice President for Communications. “Our goal is to have 200 students registered and voting.”

The day is celebrated as Mexican Independence Day, after, in the early hours of Sept. 16, 1810, Father Hidalgo, accompanied by several co-conspirators – Ignacio Allende, and Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez – rang the bell of his little church, calling everyone to fight for liberty.

Democratic Party kickoff Friday

Morgan Hill – The public is invited to the Grand Opening of the Democratic Party Headquarters in South County, Friday, Sept. 17, from 6-8:30pm, at 15335 Calle Enrique (just off Watsonville Road) in Morgan Hill.

Democrats from Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy will be coming to anticipate the election of John Kerry to the Presidency in November.

An outdoor barbecue event is free for all to attend.

Assemblyman Simon Salinas and State Senate candidate Peg Pinard will make short presentations.

The South County Democratic Club is sponsoring this kickoff of the political season.

There will also be a “silent auction” to raise money for the club.

Gilroy – The Gilroy Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will start the year off with a membership lunch on Saturday.

Since 1881 AAUW has been a leading voice in promoting education and equity for women and girls, influencing public debate on issues such as education, civil rights and health care.

Membership is open to all persons who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Locally, AAUW awards two scholarships for women going to college, sponsors a scholarship to Tech Trek camp for a middle school girl and holds televised election forums. The group also provides stimulating and enjoyable social opportunities.

Enroll now and become a junior ranger

Gilroy – Coyote Lake County Park is starting a free junior ranger program for 9 to 11 year olds.

In six sessions, children will learn about the roles of the ranger, the plants and animals in the park, and the Ohlone people.

The program will be held on Wednesdays, Sept. 22 through Nov. 3, from 3:30 to 5:30pm, except Oct. 6. Children must be able to attend at least four of the six programs.
