Election volunteers needed
Gilroy – Volunteering is a great way for voters to serve their communities and get involved in the democratic process. Election Officers will earn a stipend of $85 or more for volunteering.
Election Officers are responsible for setting up the polling place, processing voters and providing assistance as requested. In addition to serving a full day at the polls (usually 6am to 9:30pm), they must also attend a three-hour training class.

Community Solutions awarded
Gilroy – Community Solutions is the recipient of the Dorothy A. Miller Outstanding Agency Award from the School of Social Work at San Jose State University. The agency was recognized at the Dorothy A. Miller Symposium, an annual event created by the family of the late Dorothy A. Miller, a longtime professor and leader in the field of social work. Community Solutions is the first honoree of the new award category, Outstanding Agency. The agency was selected for their quality, excellence and commitment to the social work profession and to the training, consulting and mentoring of student interns.

GPD looking for volunteer painters
Gilroy – The Gilroy Police Department Neighborhood Resource Unit is looking for volunteer painters who want to make a difference in the community.
Members of the unit will be painting a mural at the Santa Teresa Bridge at Third Street called “School Safe Passage for Kids.”
Volunteers are invited to pick up a brush and help paint from 10am to 12pm, Saturday, June 3.

Flea market fundraiser
Gilroy – Gilroy Senior Advisory Board’s flea market will be held from 9am to 3pm Saturday, at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. Tables are $20 for the public and $15 for board members. The Gilroy Senior Advisory Board asks that no large pieces of furniture are brought. Concessions will be provided, thanks to the Fil-Am Club.

Gilroy Relay For Life
Gilroy – Relay For Life fundraiser will be Saturday, May 27, from noon to 5pm at Fortino Winery, 4525 Hecker Pass Hwy.
Live music featuring ‘Cold Storage’ a ’50s and ’60s era band performing 1 to 4pm. The event will include wine and lunch. Fifty percent of all proceeds go to Relay For Life.

Hospice of the Valley moving
San Jose – Hospice of the Valley (HOV) announced plans to move its headquarters to a new location in San Jose to meet the community’s growing need for end-of-life care programs and services. The move is in response to the increased demand for the organization’s core programs: Transitions, hospice, education and bereavement. The new building, located on Union Avenue near Highway 85, is being renovated. The move is scheduled to be completed by late summer 2006.
Memorial Day wildlife cruise
Moss Landing – Memorial Day Weekend Wildlife Cruise will be held Friday, May 26 through Monday, May 29 at 9:15am. During this two-hour tour you will take a pontoon boat ride through Elkhorn Slough, which features wildlife animals such as otters, seals, and hundreds of birds.

Gilroyans Receive Eagle Scout Award
Gilroy – On May 20, five men from Gilroy were recognized as an elite group of individuals who had mastered the final set of leadership skills as part of their involvement with the Boys Scouts of America. They became outstanding in all that Scouting represents and received the highest advancement rank known as the Eagle Scout Award.
Steve Brandvold painted the basketball court design, hopscotch pad, shuffle board and four-square and nine-square ball playing areas for Gavilan Hills Academy. School colors were used.
Jeff Gaines organized 40 people into teams of 2 to 4 who repainted nearly 50 fire hydrants in a specified geographic location for the City of Gilroy.
Jose Mirelez refurbished the historic 5th street Willey House by painting interior rooms for the city of Gilroy.
Steve Robles created a circular driveway at Gavilan Hills Academy as a way of redirecting traffic flow by constructing and oval shaped planter surrounding the school flag pole.
Luis Vasquez painted directional lines and placed distance markers along the walking/running/biking trail on the levy near Christmas Hill Park for the City of Gilroy.
Mayor A Pinheiro presented each with certificates from the City Council. Flags were also flown over the White House and letters of recognition were received by other government officials. State and local leaders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were in attendance including Stake President Darrell Foote and Bishop Floyd Rose. in the south part of the county, including Gilroy and Morgan Hill.
