Gilroy Unified School board president Francisco Dominguez is extending the reach of his support for his state assembly campaign thanks to an endorsement by Watsonville City Council member Greg Cupat this week.

Dominguez, a Democrat from Gilroy, hopes to take Anna Caballero’s place as representative for the 28th Assembly District.

“While my home base is in Gilroy, I’m pleased to have earned the support of Council Member Cupat in Watsonville,” Dominguez said. “This is an indication that my campaign is gaining momentum outside of my hometown. We will continue to fight for every vote in all four counties of this district. My message of building consensus seems to be resonating well.”

Campaign strategist Vince Duffy said that the endorsement shows that Dominguez is making inroads into the home turf of his main opponent, Watsonville Mayor Luis Alejo.

As of late last year, San Benito County Supervisor Jamie De La Cruz, Hollister Mayor Eugenia Sanchez, Salinas councilwoman Janet Barnes, and political consultant and campaign manager Rick Rivas are all Democrats who had expressed interest in the seat, which will be left vacant as Caballero runs for the state senate.

Rick Shephard of Salinas and Allen Barker and Rob Bernosky, both of Hollister, are seeking Republican nominations.
