Just because cupid came along when you were a little low on cash doesn’t mean you’re a bad Valentine, just that you may want to be a little more creative. Remember it’s the thought that counts, so try surprising your sweetheart. Here are a few ideas:

• Make dinner for her at home and then go for a walk, picking flowers along the way. Soon you’ll have an entire bouquet.

• Write your wife or girlfriend a love letter. Tell her about the first time you saw her or the first time you realized that you were in love with her. Revisit the first time you kissed, your favorite part of her body, or the way you feel when you’re around her.

• Call her favorite radio station and request your song or burn her a CD with songs whose lyrics tell how you feel about the woman in your life.

• Bake her cookies.

• Mail her a Valentine’s Day card at the office or stop by unexpectedly during the day if you have the chance.

• Have a friend take your picture in a nice setting – in a field of mustard flowers or along one of the beautiful vistas near Henry Coe Park – and frame the finished product.

• Make your wife or girlfriend a coupon book redeemable for things like backrubs, apologies and cuddling.

If she likes to wear her long hair up, visit a beauty shop. Most stock a large assortment of crystal and glass hair ties and pins that are both pretty and inexpensive.

• Run her a warm bath with scented salts or bath gels, available at most drug stores and discount retailers. Light a couple of scented candles, pour her a drink and let her relax … or give her some company.

• Rent her favorite movie and pick up a bag of popcorn for a private theater experience.
