Casinos, funds for transportation and community colleges and term limits join presidential candidates on the primary election ballot Feb. 5, and Santa Clara County election workers are looking for volunteers to help out at the polls.

“We are really encouraging people to vote absentee,” Jesse Durazo, register of voters for Santa Clara County, said Thursday. “It’s a win-win situation for everybody, no lines, no parking problems, you don’t have to go looking for your polling place. We’ve already received approximately 6,000 of the 400,000 we sent out last Saturday.”

Voters who decide to go to the polls, Durazo said, will notice that each precinct will have just one electronic voting machine, a state requirement in order for the election to be certified.

The county needs more than 1,000 volunteers to serve as election officers.

Anyone who is a registered voter qualifies, and the county will provide training. High school students can also volunteer if they are at least 16 years old and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average. Election officers and student election officers are paid a $95 stipend.

Besides choosing a presidential candidate, California voters will consider four referendums dealing with Indian gaming contracts and measures on transportation and community college funding and term limits. There are no Gilroy issues on the ballot.
