The unbelievable story of John Merrick called the “Elephant Man” is true. It tells the tale of a poor lost soul that was abandoned by his indigent, less-than-bright mother who could not handle a horribly deformed child. The 1800s did not look at what they perceived not to be the norm with sympathy or benevolence. Merrick was a abhorrence to look at and was made to lose all dignity in a freak show where he was mistreated and cheated by his con artist manager and finally shoved out on his own when his appearances caused near riots. Rescued by Dr. Frederick Treves and given shelter and care at a hospital he shows a compelling, sweet, innocent soul that lives his tortured young life out with some insecurities that all is too good to be true. At the same time his inquisitive, sometimes ironically, droll intelligence comes through with heartwarming innocence.

The story is amazing and difficult to bring to the stage. Robert Kelly directed this drama in 1985 and his experience again brings in a beautiful, consummate, delicate, production.

Aldo Billingslea is amazing as Merrick. Most of the disfigurement is his remarkable use of his body and face that gives a transference that lets the imagination do the rest. The audience sees the horrendously disfigured man and at the same time an exquisite actor that brings in a compelling, powerful performance.

Rebecca Dines as usual is on top of her game. She brings just enough of the enlightened woman of her time to be believable and enjoyed.

The rest of the cast is a great gathering of fine actors some playing more than one role and bringing in solid performances.

Andrea Bechert’s multileveled set of the hospital that changes like a kaleidoscope to the street scenes and back to the hospital is a marvel for setting the mood and creating location without confusion.

For an evening of excellent, fine drama with performances you won’t soon forget, a trip to Mountain View will be well worth your time.
