As part of the Elks National Youth Week, Gilroy Elks Lodge
hosted a scholarship awards banquet Wednesday to honor graduating
seniors from Gilroy and Live Oak high schools.
Elks Gives $6,000 in Awards
Gilroy – As part of the Elks National Youth Week, Gilroy Elks Lodge hosted a scholarship awards banquet Wednesday to honor graduating seniors from Gilroy and Live Oak high schools. The banquet had 24 guests in attendance that included the students, their families and scholarship advisors Rudy Puente and Diana Padilla from Gilroy High School.
Live Oak High School seniors Ariana Hosseini received $500, Raymond Leung and Melissa Poon both received $1,000.
Gilroy High School seniors Alexis Dalke, Arianna Azevedo and Anna Carbonel each received $500. Carbonel and Azevedo also received $800 from the State Elks Association. Jasmine Hyatt received $1,000 from the Gilroy Lodge and $800 from the state association. The big winner of the evening was Jairo Rodriquez Avalos, who received $1,000 from the Gilroy Elks, $200 from the State Elks Association and is a finalist for the Elks National Foundation for which he will receive at least $4,000 and will be competing for the highest scholarship, which is $60,000.
Sister City Dinner, Auction
Gilroy – The Gilroy Sister Cities Association is holding an International Dinner and Auction Saturday, May 5 at the IFDES Portuguese Lodge, 250 Old Gilroy St. It begins with a social hour at 6pm. Dinner will be served at 7pm, followed by an auction at 8:45pm.

Play Free for Mothers Sunday
Gilroy – The cast and crew of “Lend Me A Tenor” would like to celebrate Mother’s Day by giving all mothers free admission to the Saturday, May 12 matinee performance. Call the Gavilan College Box Office at 846-4973 to reserve seats and free Mother’s Day ticket.
The special Mother’s Day Matinee of “Lend Me A Tenor” begins at 2pm, at the Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at the Gavilan College Theater Box Office or at 846-4973.
Adopt a Pet at Weekend Fair
Morgan Hill – Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter is hosting a pet adoption fair, noon to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday at Petco in Morgan Hill, corner of Tennant Avenue and Monterey Road.

‘The Jungle Book’ on Stage
Gilroy – The city’s Community Services Department and Director Erin Cross presents Disney’s “The Jungle Book Kids” featuring actors ages 6 to 15 years of age. Performances are May Friday and Saturday May 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7pm; Sunday matinees May 13 at 2pm and May 20 at 5pm. All performances take place at South Valley Middle School, 385 IOOF Ave.
Tickets are $10, and can be purchased at the door or in advance at the City of Gilroy Community Services at 7351 Rosanna St.

Local Horsemen Meet Friday
San Martin – The San Martin Horsemen’s Association’s general meeting will be held at 7pm, Friday, at the San Martin Lion’s Club, 425 Murphy Ave., San Martin. The event is a potluck. Chris Shaw will talk about proper tack.

Crab Feed Benefits GHS Athletics
Gilroy – The Gilroy High School Athletic Association will be holding its 27th Annual Crab Cioppino Feed and Dance at Christopher Ranch Saturday, May 12. The dance will feature one of Gilroy’s favorite bands, Shaboom. This year the event will also feature a sports memorabilia auction with items from all the local favorites. Additional nonsports items will be available for auction as well.
Proceeds from the event help pay for transportation for teams to athletic events. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased at the school in the ASB office from 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday, or online at www.gilroyhighschool.com.
