SALINAS – Every player on the Gilroy High girls’ basketball team roster had a hand in Monday night’s 70-27 road victory over the Alvarez Eagles.
All five Mustang starters on down to the last reserve scored, helping Gilroy earn its third win in as many Tri-County Athletic League contests.
“We’re 3-0 and that’s kind of cool,” Gilroy coach Susan Shapiro said.
Lauren Rhodes and Lindsey Foster both reached double figures scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Laura Steel had a game-high 11 rebounds to go with five points, and Chelsea Hill had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman Michelle Sosa had six points and eight rebounds, while Sovi Nou and Jennifer Rose had five points apiece. Other GHS scorers included Alana Osaki (eight points), Christy Pineda (four), Ashley Lambert (four), Demornay Granados (three) and Kristen Costa (two).
The Mustangs (11-6 overall) recorded 30 steals, while giving up just 13 turnovers.
Gilroy will have three days of practice before getting back to the hardwood Friday night, when it plays at San Benito. Facing their rival, who also hold the title of reigning Central Coast Section champs, should provide plenty of motivation for the Mustangs.
“I would say my starting five are ready to hit it,” Shapiro said.
“I think we match up pretty well with them. We like to run the ball and they like to run the ball.”
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
