This month my husband and I will celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary. Rather than go to a beach resort, we chose to spend our honeymoon in New Orleans. As a result, I have always had a love of that city even though I never made it to Madri Gras. As the fourth anniversary of 9/11 draws near, it is painful for me to see the devastation wrought on the Gulf Coast by Katrina. I am certain that our country will come together to support our fellow citizens just as we did following 9/11.

The end of summer saw the final weekend of the Fifth Street Live music series downtown. This inaugural year of concerts was a great success, and it was wonderful to see so many people come together downtown to enjoy the variety of musical talent that South County has to offer. I look forward to another great series of concerts next summer.

Fortunately, the summer is not our final opportunity to get out and celebrate small town living. The next few weeks provide some opportunities for all of us to come together for a number of good local causes. This weekend will start it off with “Hey Old Friend” on Saturday night at the Gilroy High Theater. This cabaret style show will feature Dennis Beasley and friends, singing and reminiscing about growing up in and returning to Gilroy. Dennis is a product of Gilroy public schools who has now returned to his hometown to become the Artistic Director of Odyssey Theatre Company, which is sponsoring this event. The one-night show is a benefit for the Gilroy Theater and the schools new library, and tickets are just $12.

The following Saturday, Sept. 17, will be a real treat. From 4 to 7pm, the South County Democratic Club will hold a fund-raiser at the Hilton Garden Inn in Gilroy. The highlight of this event will be the recognition of 10 young people from Gilroy and Morgan Hill whose outstanding community service will be honored that afternoon. An added bonus is the presence of two Democratic heavyweights; our State Assembly member Simon Salinas and State Assembly member John Laird of Santa Cruz.

Also on Sept. 17 is the annual Gilroy Downtown Pasta Extravaganza. This is one of the most enjoyable evenings in town. The pasta is wonderful, and there are a variety of pastas offered. There’s a table decorating contest and the music is wonderful, too. But the real treat here is the excellent service provided by our local middle school band students.

The event is co-sponsored and benefits the three middle schools and the Gilroy downtown merchants. Tickets will be available through downtown merchants or from your local neighborhood band student.

On Sept. 24 and 25, it’s time for the Taste of Morgan Hill. Once again, there will be great food to sample with something for everyone. In conjunction with this annual event, there will be the 2005 Harvest Quilt and Garden Show. This event runs both Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm in beautiful downtown Morgan Hill.

On Oct. 1, the Gilroy Foundation will hold its annual “Day in the Country” event.

The Gilroy Foundation is the largest charitable-giving organization in town (besides the Garlic Festival), awarding more than $50,000 annually in grants to local schools and non-profits. This year’s event will be held at beautiful Cordevalle in San Martin.

The tickets are $150 each, which includes a wine tasting, a fabulous dinner and wine pairing, and both a silent and live auction. This event is also a just great opportunity to get all dressed up without having to go out of town. Ticket information is available by emailing di******@**************on.org.
