Morgan Hill is about to get a new church. On May 27, Family Freedom Worship Center held a benefit concert at the Morgan Hill Community Center to introduce its staff and ministries to South County residents.
Nearly 10 years ago, Pastor George Guerrero with his co-pastor and wife, Rosie, opened a church in the Evergreen area of San Jose.
They established several successful ministries, working out of rented facilities.
Three years ago, they moved their residence to Morgan Hill and decided to move their church here, too.
Pastor George says, “Being residents of Morgan Hill, we have been blessed by the unity and bond this town has as a whole. It has been our spirit to own a church for people of all walks of life to call ‘home,’ and a place for refuge in the times of trouble.”
While thinking and praying about this idea, a unique opportunity presented itself. Rick and Fran Dresser had purchased the old St. Catherine’s Hall at 40 East Dunne Ave. for use as a Christian book store.
When they discovered there would be a two-year wait for renovations to be completed before it could open for business, they decided to open Eternal Treasures in the Vineyard Town Center instead.
One day Pastor George came into the store. When he mentioned to Dresser his ambition to open a church in Morgan Hill, the two of them agreed that the church could buy the vacant hall.
George Guerrero has been a San Jose firefighter for the past 15 years. During this time he has witnessed many human tragedies: “suicides, elderly illnesses due to loneliness, marriages and families torn apart by hatred.”
Afterwards, he would talk to Rosie and pray together for the affected people.
Their hope is that their church can offer a solution for such problems here in South County.
Already they have formulated goals for Family Freedom Worship Center when they open in Morgan Hill:
• Establishing a youth program so teens have a safe place to go and feel welcome, including an afterschool homework center
• Continuing a successful ministry called Golden Street Hip Hop MInistries, a Christian dance group which sparks interest whenever it performs
• Holding monthly evening events for senior citizens, enabling them to get out of their homes to socialize
A native of San Jose, Pastor George felt a call to the ministry after he had already begun his career with the fire department. He has studied at several schools and received a degree from Sierra Bible College, being ordained an associate pastor at Vision Christian Center five years before founding his own church.
Because of his schedule as a professional firefighter, his wife has been an essential part of his ministry. As co-pastor she carries out ministerial duties when he is unavailable.
In speaking about his unusual set of careers, Pastor George says, “I put fires out, but I also start them as a spiritual arsonist.”
