SVJH hoops wins seventh-grade title.
GILROY – The community services department held the second annual ‘Fastbreak’ Girls Junior High basketball tournament Nov. 23-24.
There were 10 schools, eight teams in the seventh grade division and 10 teams in the eighth grade division. Only school teams were allowed to participate. Schools came from San Bruno to Los Banos.
South Valley won the seventh grade championship in a close 28-25 victory over Bret Harte out of San Jose. Thomas Russel of Milpitas beat South Valley in the eighth grade division, 28-23.
Local players that received individual awards in the seventh grade division were Brittany Balanesi from South Valley for second team all-tournament; Vanessa Wilkins from South Valley for first team all-tournament; Jasmine Evans from South Valley for first team all-tournament; and Most Valuable Player Amanda Spellman from South Valley.
In the eighth grade division, Dana Schoeneman from Brownell for second team all-tournament; Alycia Bostock from South Valley for second team all-tournament; Deborah Senior from South Valley for first team all-tournament; and Best Defensive Player Russhelle Preeshi from South Valley.
