Gilroy High field hockey head coach Adam Gemar said recently that his team’s defense would play a major role in how the rest of the Mustangs season plays out.

On Tuesday, that facet carried the Mustangs to a 3-0 shutout victory over Saratoga, in an important Mount Hamilton Division contest.

“We played great. Our defense won the game. We’ve been working hard on (defense) after our loss against St. Francis, and it has paid off,” Gemar said. “This is the first game we won by executing great team defense.”

Of course, the Mustangs needed goals on offense to complete the all-around effort, and Monica Marrazzo (two) and Ezzie Gobea delivered those. Emma Leach and Gobea were credited with assists.

“We needed this win,” Gemar added.

The Mustangs are 4-3 in the division, with losses to one-goal losses to Mitty and Los Gatos mixed in, as they make the turn into the second half of the season.
