GILROY – It could have been a cigarette, match, candle or similar source that started a fire Tuesday morning in an old, wooden house on Old Gilroy Street.

Fire investigators aren’t sure of the exact cause, but they are convinced it was unintentional.

Gilroy Fire Department Capt. Art Amaro said he and other investigators came to their conclusion after comparing Tuesday’s fire with past ones: some accidental, some arson.

The house’s wiring did not spark the fire, according to Amaro.

“There was no electrical power to that corner of the room (where the blaze began),” he said.

Firefighters contained the fire to a single bedroom in the 421 Old Gilroy St. home. No one was injured.

Several people lived in the house, none of whom had a rental agreement in his or her name, Amaro said. The man who signed the lease had moved out some time before. The residents were his friends, but he told emergency officials he had been trying to get them out before the fire, according to Amaro.
