The Raiders announced the release of tight end Kevin Boss on Tuesday, putting him on the open market along with 15 other members of the 2011 Raiders on the first day of free agency.
The NFL Network first reported Boss would be cut Monday. His agent, Scott Smith, said on his Twitter account Tuesday that he had been informed the release would actually take place Wednesday.
Quarterback Jason Campbell, who watched the Raiders trade for Carson Palmer after seeing his season end with a broken right collarbone, quickly signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears to back up Jay Cutler.
Wide receiver Chaz Schilens was visiting with the Arizona Cardinals, according to the Arizona Republic, and also was scheduled to visit with the 49ers, according to the Sacramento Bee.
The agent for linebacker Kameron Wimbley said he has had no communication with the Raiders. Under the terms of Wimbley’s contract, he is in line for $17.5 million in future money if he is on the roster Friday at 1 p.m. (PDT).
Included in the guarantee would be next year’s salary of $11 million.
The Raiders reportedly would like Wimbley to stay, but at a reduced rate. Even if cut, Wimbley would receive $6.5 million this season from the Raiders.
The Raiders presumably did not need to make the Wimbley move in order to get under the league’s $120.6 million salary cap.
