TENNIS: Alisal sweeps doubles play in 5-2 win over Christopher

CHS (1-1) vs. Pacific Grove (1-0). Kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.
The Christopher High football team has intentions of following up last week’s 50-0 drubbing of Live Oak with another collective effort as the Cougars host Pacific Grove in nonleague action tonight in Gilroy.

Head coach Tim Pierleoni called last week’s blowout a benchmark victory for the three-year program and a confidence boost heading into tonight’s ball game.

“That’s a win three years coming if you think about it, because we hadn’t ever really dominated a team like that,” he said.

Pacific Grove landed a 35-14

triumph over Pajaro Valley in its season opener last week.

“They are very fast. They run to the ball very well on defense,” Pierleoni said. “They have a really neat offense where they use their speed to run the ball to the edge.

“We will prepare the same way as far as formation recognition and strategy situations defensively. Those are the two most important things,” Pierleoni said. “And then in the game, we need to be able to defend that edge.”

The Cougars’ defense allowed just 34 yards of offense against the Acorns. Patrick Mank leads the linebacking core with 22 tackles, safety Bryant Cid has 19 and Mikey Pirnik 17 through two games.

Pierleoni made note in between Christopher’s loss to Sobrato and the victory over Live Oak that he wanted to see a bit more production in the passing game out of sophomore Rayshon Mills. The receiver/running back had four catches for 85 yards last Friday.

Pierleoni also wanted to see better decision making out of signal caller Brandon Pickens. The senior responded with a 14-of-24 passing day versus LO.

“He knows that with the offense that we are running, more is dependent on his play,” Pierleoni said. “He takes pride in being a good football player.”
