Boys win two at tournament, 4-25 a distant hoops memory
It’s the middle of December and last year’s win total has already been surpassed.
Not a bad start for the Gilroy High boys’ basketball team.
The Mustangs stand at 5-3 after winning the consolation championship of the Valley Christian tournament this weekend.
After opening with an 80-59 loss to eventual champion Woodside, Gilroy rebounded with wins over Lincoln (San Francisco) and Irvington despite playing without injured power forward Vince Mitre.
In Friday’s 57-44 victory over Lincoln, senior guard Adam Supnet led the way with 14 points, including all four of the team’s three-pointers. Sophomore transfer Cameron Handy, who led the team in scoring average (13.0 ppg) for the tourney, contributed 12.
Against Irvington on Saturday, the Mustangs rolled to a 52-39 victory. Handy poured in 17 points and Supnet dished out eight assists. The pair had three steals apiece, as did Calvin Kretz.
Gilroy closed out the tournament with a win despite being shorthanded in the middle. Senior Mark Kennedy missed the weekend with an injury and starter Ryan Chisolm, who scored 24 points in the first two games, committed four fouls in the first half of the consolation game.
Junior Dominic Jackson stepped right in, though – chipping in eight points and upping his weekend total to 22.
Considering the team finished 4-25 last season, this year could already be labeled a success. But GHS head coach Bud Ogden isn’t taking that attitude.
He wants more – a lot more – from his players.
Ogden said he was pleased with Jackson’s play over the weekend, but wasn’t exactly thrilled with his team’s overall performance.
“We show little spurts of good passing and team defense,” he said, “but right now, we’re just not there. We just need to be more consistent and execute better.
“Fortunately, I think we’ve played a pretty good schedule, which should make us better and tougher as the season goes along.”
The season continues with tonight’s game at Archbishop Mitty, starting at 7. Then, kicking off Thursday, the Mustangs host the 25th annual Bob Hagen Tournament.
Girls also close with win
After dropping a two-point heartbreaker to eventual champ Hilmar, the Mustangs finished off a 2-1 PG Tourny with a 59-44 win over tournament host Pacific Grove Saturday.
Gilroy (5-2) led the Breakers from start-to-finish.
“Our goal coming in was the game and the tempo from the beginning – and we did a pretty good job of doing that,” GHS head coach Kari Williams said. “We definitely executed our offense. They weren’t able to press us at all.”
For the third straight game, point guard Kristen Campos led the team with 16 points. Williams slso singled out for praise senior Michelle DiFiore – “a monster on the boards” – and fellow senior Kendall Costa, who scored all eight of her points off offensive rebounds.
Gilroy is back action Wednesday at the Burlingame Tournament with a 4:45pm game against Thurgood Marshall High of San Francisco.
