The Gilroy councilman who pleaded “no contest” in December to a misdemeanor for stealing thousands of dollars from a private Memorial Day parade fund has completed his community service hours.
Gartman, who now lives out of state, said he volunteered at nonprofit organizations and turned in his final paperwork, signaling the end of his 200 service hours in March.
Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney John Chase said the judge will sign off on Gartman’s community service paperwork on May 14.
“I don’t plan on showing up,” Gartman said over the phone. “The court just wants to know that it got done.”
Prosecutors accused Gartman of siphoning away $8,000-$9,000 from the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Gilroy. In December, Gartman was sentenced to two years unsupervised probation, community service hours. The court also ordered him to pay back his victims.
